The public in general are getting clever with their purchases. If we are looking at a deep and sustained recession (some doom-mongers say depression where the world will end) then these purchases are going to be more and more researched and price sensitive. The internet is one way to do this as its easy and simple. Its a growing trend and will only continue to be used more and more.
What bothers me is that so much of our supposedly great Retail companies expect us to be stupid and NOT shop around and to buy cheap crap at vastly inflated prices! Well guess what chaps, you can count on the high street less and less - time to change your business model I think!

Equally, so much of our retail business at this time of year is utterly focused about selling us cheap crap at inflated prices, because they know they can get away with it. Our retailers talk the talk about it being really hard and competitive, but if you stock the right stuff then it sells.
Being slightly tall (6'5") I find it virtually impossible to buy anything in the high street any more. Why? Am I some sort of mutant? Of course not, its because they never stock my size so I have to shop elsewhere. Seem fair? A quick click around and I can suddenly get stuff much cheaper, with a greater choice and typically with a much better level of service.
Yes, I understand that service in retail is gradually being erroded because of the constant drive to reduce costs, but tell me, quite how much money do the big giants make per item? And they still get to pay the minimum wage to most of the shop floor staff? Who is making the money there? Pay peanuts, get monkeys - seems reasonable. Maybe we are forcing the degeneration of our high streets - but this is always going to happen until the giants get the arse into gear and start addressing the challenges they have. Rather than trying to retain the status quo, why not embrace what is happening and compete? Some retailers do and guess what? They seem to make a damn good job of it too....
People will pay for service, willingly - BUT, they wont be ripped off, and currently a lot of the stuff sold on the high street is a complete rip off....

Maybe, just maybe, they had cash in the bank and bought carefully? Holding out for the best deal they could and pouncing like some evil consumer? Or maybe they are careful with their money and have little or no credit elsewhere and decided to replace their old car? I do wonder what goes through peoples minds.
You never know where people get their money, unless you ask - it might not actually be credit.
