Hi Folks

The Webasto aux heater on my 54 X5 ain't working. I've checked fuse F59 and it's fine. Any suggestions before i take it to my very expensive local dealer?

Many thanks.

Our trains are fitted with Webasto aux heaters, they generally are very reliable - the only problems with them are occasionally the thermostats fail and the carry on heating the coolant beyond the 78 deg C they're designed to cut out at, giving the cooling system a hard time trying to dissipate the excess heat. I'll ask one of our fitters tomorrow what other problems can occur if you like.

Is it getting fuel to it? Our train ones have their own fuel filter, it may have dissintegrated.

Is the electric water pump whirring away? If not the check the feed with a voltmeter if possible, there may be another fuse somewhere.

If the car's out of warranty then maybe try a Webasto service and supplying dealer to look at the unit, may well be cheaper and more clued up than a BMW franchised dealership.

Glow plug? Webasto agent could fit a new one but BMW will want to replace the whole unit IME.

Ah - thanks for the tip on the glow-plug. I will mention that to the local Webasto agent when I take the X5 in later this week. I'm sure they'll be impressed with my knowledge
