Virgin cable tv: my picture is clipped.

I notice that an inch or two is missing from the sides of the picture on most programs. Is this common, or am I being short changed? I have checked out all adjustments on the tv, and there is no indication it is the telly doing it.
It is most noticeable when the credits or titles come up, and you see the first or last letters of names and such missing, just like a cheapo bootleg movie, filmed in a cinema.
And no, it is not the zoom adjusted wrong, as it is the same no matter what shape you have the picture.
Anybody else noticed this?

I just found some adjustments on the Virgin hand set, Widescreen, 4:3 and postbox, or something like that, but none make any difference to anything.
The tv does autochange screen profile for different channels or programs, but no matter which I change it too I still have my 'edges' missing.
I may have a mess with the actual VM box and see if there is anything to twiddle or press.

What set top boxes are you using? What channels do you see this on and is it all programmes or just some?
I'm currently working for Virgin testing the new Samsung PVR box so will speak to the guys who test the current hardware tomorrow if you can give me some more info.
You will get black bars at the sides if you are watching a 4:3 broadcast with the STB set to 16:9 though.

Aren't a lot of TVs 16:10? If so and set to fill the screen, the vertical will be increased and so will the width, hence losing bits at the side. Does smart settings give black lines top and bottom?
My Freview box badged (VM) can display letterbox on my ordinary TV or full screen depending on program.

It is not the profile of the tv or the picture, as I can press a button on the tv controller and make the picture all different shapes and sizes, but the edges are still missing. The box is Samsung 2110C. Sounds like you have the Scientific Atlantic box, reset button on the right and standby on the left IIRC? They are the current standard and work pretty well, if a little slow.My Freview box badged (VM) can display letterbox on my ordinary TV or full screen depending on program.

Had my new V+ box put in on Saturday moving from a normal VM box. All the pictures look to be squashed in the vertical i.e. people have fat faces. I can't work out if it is actually squashed or not though, obviously tried all the settings etc.
Also, Dave, I have a DVI only but the resolution is HD capable, input on my telly, when using a hdmi to dvi cable the picture is massively zoomed in on the picture. I've ordered a new adaptor just in case but do you have any ideas?

From what you have said it sounds a case of having to get the right combination of settings between the box and TV. I assume you have the STB set to HDMI (either 720 or 1080) and the TV set to widescreen with autodetect turned off?
If using a SCART input, make sure you set the STB to an RGB signal, and the TV of course.
I have only ever had problems as described by the OP when the STB and the TV had different settings for picture size. As long as they are the same (or set to "auto" on the TV) then the inches are not lost.
