Mk2 GTI Problem
Discussion
Hi guys,
Picking up my budget Mk2 Golf GTI 8v tomorrow. It's got a few problems I guess will need immediate attention though, both concerning oil leaks. One from the gearbox (see picture) and the other the oil filter housing.

Gearbox oil is weeping through the end plate (which is the metallic piece with the VW roundel in the picture). The previous owner scrubbed it clean, removing a layer of corrosion, with a wire brush but it appears to be a fairly pourus material and is now letting oil through. Is this a problem anyone else has encountered and does this whole piece have to be replaced or is there a quick fix solution?
The other leak is a bit more manageable I hope. The gasket between the block and the oil filter housing has cracked and the previous owner has attempted to address the problem using sealer but to no avail. Is replacing the gasket straightforward? I should mention that although it's a mk2, it's had a mk1 engine fitted.
Thanks in anticipation
Chris

'vagcat'is website that you can join free, and look up part numbers and prices in euros-very easy to use.
the gearbox cover thingy was only £5 from vag for my mk2 golf,or you could try and prize out the old one intact and re-seal.
straightforward job to change that other gasket aswell,am supposing yours has water/oil-cooler above the oil-filter,in which case you'll have to drain cooling system and disconnect small water hoses to cooler.
would change large o-ring 'tween top of oil-cooler and mounting bracket aswell as they are prone to leaks, yet again-pennies from vag.

That VW tin cover should not have any oil behind it to leak as far as I can remember, it is pretty much a knock on dust cover. If there is oil behind it, I would suggest you have an internal clutch pushrod seal leaking, letting oil in where it should not be.
But has been a while since I had one apart!

Hmm, that is a worry. The substance weeping through is distinctly brown aswell, different to engine oil. Does this sound like gearbox oil?But has been a while since I had one apart!
Gearbox oil can be varying colours, some is bright red.
Dont panic, GSF do new covrs for about £3, get a spare new one, then jack it up and lever off the old with screwdrivers.
If stuff comes spewing out, you can just wack the new one on and top the oil up! !
I'd suggest a haynes manual. I rebuilt my complete mk2, motor and all with one.
