The internal HDD in my wifes Dell (Inspiron 1150) has given up and im looking for a replacement. The problem is I cant find a new direct replacement for the original Hitachi Travelstar DK23FB-40, and im wondering what alternatives will fit. Its a 44pin IDE, ATA-100.

I have seen a few other Travelstars on eBay which have a greater capacity etc, but I wnat to make sure I get one that fits. Any recommendations??

Your on the right forum mate, this place is heaving with boffins. I'm amazed, they all seem to be in IT on here. I'm just a lowly power user.driving

pretty much any 2.5" IDE drive will work as long as you dont buy one with the newer SATA interface. Think the last one I bought was around 50-60 quid for 120Gb.

Some are thicker than others and may not fit.
Try and get the same model drive, maybe in larger capacity.

I stuck a 120GB in the last one I fixed. Watch the connectors. There was an adapter fitted to the hard drive pins and you need to pull this off and transfer it. Get the drive from PC World.

You should be fine with just about any ATA 2.5 drive mate.

They start from bugger all these days, heres a nice quick list. Clicky

As said, just make sure you get the pins etc all lined up correctly.
