...a criminal record?
Surely this can't be true, a mates dad was telling me that if you get prosecuted you would end up with a criminal record...
sounds ominus?
If your prosecuted for the right kind of offence, then yes. There are a host of offences that can be dealt with by a court that do not result in a criminal record on conviction.

As Outlaw says there is no downside to having a criminal record (unless you are a carer of some sort) due to the confidentiality laws.
However this is changing slowly but surely because employers are now asking you to provide criminal conviction information (you can get hold of your own but no one else can) as part of the job application process.
