Has anyone here looked into a sports exhaust system for their ST220? How about sports cats or decats?

I'm currently thinking about having a high-quality exhaust made up for our ST estate. Does anyone know if the entire system is different from the saloon and hatch, or just the back section? Are the saloon and hatch the same system as each other, or are they all different?

The saloon is different from the estate simply because the estate is longer. No other differences.

The stock system isn't bad by Ford standards, but still pretty restrictive (and far too quiet).

So, are the saloon and hatch identical systems? When I get the new (top-quality stainless) system made up for our estate, the exhaust builder plans to build a similar system for other ST220s. He'll need a car to design it around, but I don't know whether it should be saloon or hatch - or both...

Not quite, the rear suspension means a different layout is required.

309–00 Exhaust System – General Information

The exhaust system of the ST220 is a completely newdesign. It offers lower exhaust back pressure, whichincreases the flow of exhaust gas and thereforecontributes to improved performance. Because of the design of the new exhaust system, the exhaust note is more sporty than that of the Mondeo ST200. With the exception of the rear exhaust manifold, it is made entirely of stainless steel. Because of the different body structures, the exhaust systems for the wagon and 4/5–door variants differ starting from the front silencer. On both body variants the exhaust system consists of two exhaust manifolds, two catalytic converters, each variant having a front and intermediate silencer and two end silencers with polished tail pipes. The exhaust system of the ST220 is a single unit in production, from the front silencer to the tail pipes. The relevant sections are available as part replacements in service.

Thanks guys. Brilliant information.

Our ST's backboxes are dropping to bits, and everyone agrees it's far too quiet. When a car uses this much fuel, I want to at least hear it working. Besides, after 19 years of modifying Fords, I can't keep one with a standard exhaust.

If anyone knows anyone with an ST220 saloon or hatch who wants an aftermarket system (very high quality) at a very favourable price, please let me know.

As far as I know, there's no off-the-shelf system available for the estate.

Like you, I couldn't really live with twin 4in tailpipes. Even my Sierra only has a 3.5in tailpipe - and that's only because it's 3.5in all the way through from the turbo.
