after what started as a gentle beep in one,then both, and me replacing the battery in one,then both,and then them telling each other that something was wrong, and then it becoming a screech in one ,then both,and me unplugging the electrics in one then both,and me looking on a troubleshooting website and me swearing my 
head off, and going back to sleep and 6 times after thinking I'd fixed them..THE censored:

Doesnt help you I know but was funny!
Had the same problem two weeks ago.
In the end took them out to get some sleep (dont moan health and safety PH'rs)
Put them back in next day and they stopped.
These things have a mind of their own !

Those things are almost indestructible!
We had some new ones fitted and I needed to dispose of the old ones. At the time we had a skip on the drive so I chucked the old ones in it. Later on I heard the 'bleepers' going so I thought I'd take a hammer to them! Two hours, and a thousand tiny pieces, later the damn things were still bleeping!

i'll bet you'd find that a sprinkle of petrol followed by flame, would reduce their powers of beeping to a smokey,charred lump of molten plastic. head off, and going back to sleep and 6 times after thinking I'd fixed them..THE censored: SMOKE ALARMS ARE STILL GOING OFF......................................................................................................and no before some smartarse says it, there isn't a fire.do NOT try this inside boys and girls
and another thing... why do the batteries only ever go flat enough to set off the low battery alarm at 2am in the morning !!!!!

BEEP.... you get the picture untill you finally realize its the smoke alarm in the no sub zero hall and you have to get up and beat it to death with a broom as you cant reach it and there is no way your going to stand on a chair half asleep..
EFA:- I assume it is actually a temperature thing with the batteries getting cold...

At one point this morning at 4.15 I was standing in the hall butt naked with a battery-less/mains-disconected smoke alarm in each hand and something was still going off every 5 mins from the ceiling where they once were Maybe they've got a built in " you don't know what you're doing" spacktard alert?
