Usually
Depends on what you class as expensive.
Rule of thumb with anything at Le Mans is get it in advance.
If you want decent Grandstands Book now. I know Just Tickets have already sold out of Somer (opposite pit exit) and didn't have much left next to it, I also doubt you'll get the ACO grandstands (opposite pits) anywhere now.
If you wait until the spring you'll probably only be able to get the grandstand above the pits (which isn't great) and I'd be surprised if anything will be available by June.

JP,
I'd say there is no chance whatsoever of getting grandstand tickets on the day. You could try and order them from the ACO now via the phone (English is spoken there!)...see the ACO website for the number. You get the tickets at face value plus express delivery which will usually be some time near June 2009. Otherwise you can get them through various agencies, or Page & Moy or Motor Racing International (see their websites for contact) BUT you will pay very substantially over the face value. For example, in 2008 for the Lagache grandstand opposite the pits the ACO charge was Euro 96 each and MRI's charge was Pound 145. I have to say that I usually buy a package from MRI but this does not mean I get reduced grandstand prices from them.
