I'm just about to renew my insurance with someone else and it will be 1 year without claims. Do I get a certificate from my insurer or does the new insurer take my word for it? How does it work?

You insurer may ask you to provide proof from your current insurer. You'll then just have to get in touch with them and ask for it. They'll either post a certificate or email proof.

I just cancelled my policy 'cause I sold my car.

They sent my proof of no claims bonus with the letter confirming the cancellation.

They should have done the same for you when you cancelled? Or can the new insurers ring them up to confirm, maybe?
