Going to Finland for the new year, what to do there?

Cause all my mates in London are being lazy barstards and have not got new year sorted yet, im off out of the country to go see the OHs family in Nokia, now what is there to see and do when im there and doing the OH dont count.

Already got the Helsinki trip planned, but need some more ideas.

Get your arse up to Finnish Lapland and do a bit of skiing and snow-mobiling. Even better when it's dark. (that'll be about 1pm, then )
Salla, Kitila etc. Great fun.

Alternatively, do a bit of ice fishing and eat as much Herring as you like.

Helsinki is fantastic = You can spend at least three days there.
Why not visit the real santaland?

Oulu is a nice city to visit as well as Tampere.

You could catch a ice hockey game in Oulu?
Ice lake driving?

Skidoo experience?
Igloo experience?

Go across to Tallin on a famous Finnish Booze cruise ship for the weekend?

Nokia for Christmas....?! Jeez I feel for you... at least if you have go to try and stay in Tampere where there is something to do (my ex-home town).

Get yourself up to Lapland for some snowmobile driving, skiing, an ice driving experience, check out the Northern Lights, get drunk with the Saami people, etc. If you want any specifics, let me know.

nokia is only from the 29th onwards, i fly back on the 7th... lapland area is boring i have been told, im thinking of getting the OH to teach me to ski/snowboard if there is anywhere to do it and there is snow.

technically she is from outside of nokia, they have a house out in the middle of nowhere.... i guess i will be trying out the sauna everyday which will be good.

Which is a bit like describing Tiverton as a nice city to visit as well as Cullompton.

I do have fond (if very hazy) memories of Oulu, from the Air Guitar years, but at this time of year you could see the highlights of the place in about 15 minutes - and the chances of getting a decent curry are probably still zero.

A week in Nowhereville with the OH's relatives? Hopefully you like the quiet life I predict lots coffee, pulla, sauna and beer...

There's not much ice around at the moment and unless you head north there's only a little snow cover. Zax junior is a little pissed off because he got new skis but can't try them out yet...

Nokia is probably the equivalent of spending New Year in Slough....

Get yourself into Tampere for New Year to go out partying and see the firework displays, etc Himos is your best bet for some skiing (depending on weather) but your OH should know all that.

Lapland is usually great fun if you plan it out but depends what you're looking for. Otherwise you can always do what most Finns will be doing - stay inside and get totally hammered on 'kossu'.

PS - if you're driving take it easy on the snow/ice and look out for the police - speeding fines are vicious in Finland.
