Recession proof industries/jobs

I was thinking about what recession proof industries there are:-

1) Working in healthcare in any way (suppliers, nurses, doctors)
2) Schools (teachers)
3) Undertakers

Any more?

Mechanics are often ok, cars always need fixing even if people aren't buying new ones.

Most govt or council jobs are pretty safe too.

Until a Star Trek-style transporter is invented....trucks will *always* be needed.

Surely if people are buying less, there's less trucks needed?

i.e. if you bought less, less needs to be brought.

People are not buying less..they are spending less.

A family of four still has to eat, if money is tight they might stop shopping at M&S but will shop at Aldi or Lidl instead.

They will buy the same amount but spend less.

But not clothes, CDs, TVs, furniture, cars etc etc etc. They'll put these purchases off until they're feeling wealthier again.

No, not just food...it's everything.

Clothes...people will always need clothes....they will buy the same amount but will change to a budget retailer.
TK Maxx, Matalan, Peacocks to name just a few. They will spend less.

CD's....check the price difference between HMV & Tesco/Asda. They will spend less.

Cars...instead of the main franchised dealer...they will use a car supermarket. They will spend less.

If what you say is true...then nobody is buying, or will be receiving anything, this Christmas.
And that of course, is not going to happen.

From case studies on recessions I've read large supermarkets are usually the last ones to go/suffer. Luxuries get cut first, downgrading to cheaper brands is usually next but people cannot get away from the need to buy food. From what I've read before people will often switch from heinz beans to asda own for example so supermarkets often seem a boost in own brand sales. Not 100% but got to be safer than the majority of the service industry/luxury non essential goods.

People will still be unwell no matter what the current financial climate, in fact as more people are made redundant and struggle with money then they will be more depressed and therefore need more anti depressants...they cant loose!
