Hi Rich

My D3 is 12 or 14 - the D3X has 16 bit as I understand it.

Had any more interesting 'offs' recently?

Both D3 and D3x have 16bit processing engines.

The Raw from the sensor is 14bit which can then be reduced to 12.

From the shots I've seen from it though its one hella stunning piece of kit.

yeah, its bound to hit the spot although a lot of people seem to be moaning already
i'm familiar with nikon glass so it makes that side of it easy
but the temptation of the H3d31 might be too great
so great that the market has opened up... lots of good equipment, lots of choice

would love to get my hands on a D3x RAW to see exactly how much latitude it has

There will be some raw shots out as soon as real people have bodies I guess.

Trouble with the MF stuff is its crap at shooting fast and autofocusing, take it away from landscapes or studio and its as good as a brick.

yep MF won't do what a dslr will do thats for sure.. chalk and cheese, but then its not supposed to

personally I don't shoot sports and I manual focus everything anyway so no probs there
the weight of these jap combos nowadys means theres no weight disadvantage either

as you say RAWS should be out before the year is out
shame we cant get a sneak peek

well, cant say im impressed with the released samples

to me they look soft and mushy, almost like there is a small bit of camera shake
i guess some or most of this is down to an aggressive AA filter and noise reduction processing
i presume they have used decent pro glass.. the bokeh is truly awful as well

the tonal gradations and noise in the bg of that first example is very poor imo
