St. ...St...St...St.. ..Stuttering.... and how to help it..
Discussion
Had a meeting the other day with a nice chap who , it turns out, had quite a noticeable stammer.
Now this is a subject close to me because in years gone by I too suffered a mild stammer, especially when I was feeling animated and trying to get a point across. It was rare when it happened in truth, but it was noticeable.
Weirdly, it seems to have fixed itself. I've become a lot more relaxed lately, more zen if you like, and with this the stutter seems to have vanished.
So, anyone here have experience of a st...st..st..stammer or a st.st. st. stutter and how they have managed to cope with it or lose it. Or is it still a problem?

I used to really suffer from this when I was a teenager and in my early 20's; sentences starting with a 'W' or 'I' were sometimes almost impossible to get out. It took a huge amount of confidence to actually say something, and as a result I usually kept pretty quiet....
It's almost totally gone now, improved since I was 23-24 maybe. Still sometimes happens when I'm stressed though!

How old were you when fixed itself?
About 33. It was'nt sudden. it just dawned on me that I was'nt doing it anymore...A bit strange.

Seriously though, one of my best mates at school had one hell of a stutter - to the extent that sometimes he couldn't get any words out at all. It seemed to start getting better when he left school (and the inevitable bullying) so I think it could do with self confidence. Did anything happen at 33? New job etc?

I was aware sometimes when speaking I would find that a word would pop into my mind which I knew I was going to use. The word would sit in my head like a huge Jabba-the-Hut character, looming and waiting for its turn, and then when it was ready it would stick there - unable to get out. Cue the stammer....
Now, the brain is no longer racing ahead faster than the mouth can keep up. The stammer has gone.
I can only conclude, therefore, that I must be more stupid and slower thinking.
I used to have trouble with Js now it’s D. It was quite bad in my teens and early 20s, much better in my 30s and coming back a bit in my late 30s.
Being relaxed is certainly the key, and the way I achieve that is by taking regular exercise and avoiding sugary foods. Forcing yourself to talk slowly helps so does singing, although that’s not always appropriate.

I never had one as a kid but when I was 17 I was walking home one night and six guys decided to jump me. The first thing I remember after it was about an hour later someone asking me if I needed an ambulance. I was trying to answer but couldn't stop stuttering. I had it for years after that and it slowly stopped. I found concentrating on what I'm going to say helps it. I only get it now when I have been drinking and cant focus properly on what I'm saying.
A friend a work has/had a really bad stammer. It had controlled his life. A couple of years ago he went on the Maguire programme (No nothing to do with car polish you petrolheads). The change has been amazing. It combines a number of things to do with control of breathing and also the mental side of it. the results are staggering.
A while ago I thought I had a stammer, turns out it was Dystonia, apparently part of the parkinsons family
Very strange, it effects me even when Im perfectly calm (with friends, in a pub for example)
Sounds like somebody strangling me
Also effects my right arm and leg, neck (muscles from the shoulder to top of neck, so its like my head is being pulled to one side)
I now have botox injections !
Considering at the time it was being investigated I was having brain scans for possible tumours it was quite a relief and I have quite a light atttitude to it, but in both work and social situations it can be a real b
h as when you avoid eye contact/ conversation (only at particular times) you get the feeling people think your being a "weirdo"
People with real severe stammers have my utmost sympathy

I'm 29 and have a stammer. Sometimes its quite bad, sometimes its non-existent, but at totally random times. I can meet 4 new people, talk to three perfectly well and will get totally stuck talking to another, every time! odd.
I really do enjoy talking to people and its a frequent part of my job but its extremely frustrating when getting stuck on words. Repeating the word or sentence correctly is frustrating to the listener but for some reason it seems totally essential to the speaker.
Doing elaborate breathing exercises and talking in a unnatural to stop it feels like the need to make a conscious effort to remember to breathe or else you would die!
It doesn't affect my life or career so I just decided to ignore it.
One strange thing is that i've personally only ever talked to about three people with a similar problem in 15 years.
