come on folks - help me out here - I posted this a while back and got NO replies !!!!!
just bought a 968 without a handbook and I've got no idea what spec of oil I should be using - any suggestions ??
also is there any need to use the Porsche filter or would it make sense to use something like a Fram - who probably make them for Porsche anyway.

My 968 manual suggests one of the following:
Multigrade:
SAE 20 W-40
SAE 20 W-50
SAE 15 W-40
Superlubrifiante:
SAE 5 W-40
SAE 5 W-50
I think "Superlubrifiante" is synthetic (the manual's in French). However, the manual's 10 years old and I think synthtic oil tehcnology has come on a bit since then so there may be something more suitable available now. I have a can of whatever I used last time in the boot but I won't have access to the car again until Fri now so not much help there I'm afraid.

Just avoid any of the 0-30 or 0-40 blend of oils unless you have a 996 or Boxster. We currently use full synthetic Castrol RS 10-60 for our top line services and track cars although I have no problems with Mobil 1 Motorsport 15-50, it's a great oil just a shame about the price.
If you change oil regularly (i.e. every 12 months) and you do less than 6000 miles per year any of the 10-40 semi-synthetic blends will do the trick, although I am not a great fan of Shell Helix. We also stock a superb Esso 10-40 semi-synthetic oil which is branded as Comma Eurolite, we have used this for years for all fresh engine rebuilds as a break-in oil and for older 911's and had no problems whatsoever. Comma also do a full synthetic "Syner-G" 10-40 which I can recommend as well. Like I said, these are Esso oild suppied from the Esso refinery so if you don't want to pay for expensive branding check them out, they are really very good and also Porsche approved.
