Old F1 Coverage

The official FOCA VHS/DVDs cover all the seasons from 1981 to the present.
Prior to that, the coverage of GPs is much more intermittent with much of the original TV footage (if the race was actually televised - they weren't all covered by TV) lost, wiped or just not available for legal reasons.
The Marlboro/Brunswick film collection covers the 1970 to 1980 seasons. The commentaries aren't always great and not all races in each season were covered, The footage was shot using a dedicated team of cameramen so the images are not those from what would have been broadcast on TV. However, they are often the only films around of certain races.
Before 1970 the situation is even more patchy with most footage being dependent on TV film reports or cinema newsreel. There is the odd gem, like the Shell Motorsport series and the classic "Nine Days in Summer" which looks at the introdution of the Ford DVF in 1967.

fair enough Eric - I was just saying unlike with films etc. for which you can generally purchase legitimate copies of long after they were first aired/shown, downloading recordings of sporting events is much less morally dubious.
In any case, if I'm unlikely to get caught I tend to abide by my own morals and ethics and ignore what the law says on the matter.

I'm sure half of what is on youtube breaches some copyright somewhere. At the moment Bernie tends to just threaten and get F1 footage pulled off the internet. I don't think he has actually sued anyone yet, but the risk is there.
It will be interesting to see how much F1 footage from the 2008 season BBC will be able to show in their Sports Personality of the Year awards.
