Belgium 92. And so it starts...............

Just been scanning some old photo's in and came across this one that i completely forgot i had. Apologies for the quality but i just turned and pressed the shutter in one movement tbh.
So there we were, sat at Stavelot on August bank holiday Sunday 1992 cold, wet and fed up with a load of german fans pushing in in front of us after claiming a stake on our little area after sitting there all day following a 24 hour coach trip with Page and Moy.
Pervading gloom only being lifted by the fact that Brundle is in 1st place and heading for his 1st ever win and then this happens:
Oh glory be, trundle Brundle's just gone off and Schumachers lining up to barrel through and ultimately bugger off up the road for his 1st win. Cue our new found spectator friends going even more ape!!
Sixteen years later and i suppose it captures a quite significant moment in both drivers careers.

Mansell was leading by a mile but his exhaust broke and started sounding horrible. It was all a bit confusing as we thought Schumacher still had to stop 5 laps to go..
Was the beginning of an era, for sure. A year on from his first start in the Jordan 191 he wins at the same place. Looked fated, didn't it?
We only had one cassette in the car, Seven by James and we played it continually. Everytime I hear Born of Frustration I think of that race! Was my first time at Spa

Yeah I remember that! Brundle quite often out qualified or was ahead of Schumi on the track. Probably the only teammate who had an equal number 1 status...
I 'm pretty sure you got it wrong there .....
Schumi was the one who went off the track & then Brundle went past him when he was on the grass..
MS who was now behind Brundle noticed his tyres were blistered ....so he pitted immediately ...that pitstop proved to be inspired.
So going off the track was in fact a stroke of luck for MS which was key to the victory.....

Stack is correct - that is how it was. Brundle pressured Schumacher into a mistake.
Edited: the closest Brundle got to Schumacher in qualie was about 2 tenths slower at Monaco and San Marino - I think Schumacher pretty much blitzed Brundle in qualie although in the races Martin was very competitive. A shame he lost his seat to Patrese for the '93 season - I seem to recall Flavio admitting as much in an interview.
Edited: the closest Brundle got to Schumacher in qualie was about 2 tenths slower at Monaco and San Marino - I think Schumacher pretty much blitzed Brundle in qualie although in the races Martin was very competitive. A shame he lost his seat to Patrese for the '93 season - I seem to recall Flavio admitting as much in an interview.

I was there too - Will need to dig out my old photos and get them scanned somehow.
Watched the start from Bus stop chicane when you could sit on the wall there, then headed round the circuit. Used up 12 (36) rolls of film that day!
Was a great couple of months did Silverstone and Hockenheim in July, than Spa in August.

After checking the bible that is Autocourse i stand well and truly corrected. Never knew that was the situation until you highlighted it (must have been the pervading gloom).
So despite going off, keeping it out of the wall in damp conditions (the lines from the picture show how close he got to binning it)he still had the presence of mind to quickly recover, note the state of Brundles tyres and dip into the pits.
They aren't built like us are they..............
