Evening all

My immune system seems to be non existant, constantly getting colds etc and they really wipe me out - basically been in bed all day.

I am a 28 year old guy, play football every sat (wealther permitting...) and train twice a week, also hit the gym and pull at least once a week when I can too.

I have a 60mile commute by train to work in a bank so leave at 7 and get home about 6.30 so it's not too bad.

I eat fairly healthy, porridge for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch with fruit and a meal at home at night. With taked aways around twice a week.

What can I do, take or cut out to help my immune system fight off germs and stop me being boots' favourite customer?

Thanks, crawls back to the sofa....

There's your problem. I recently started catching the train to work again and straight away started picking up bugs and colds. Public transport is a health hazard.

Dont take anything for the germs, just let your body sort it out itself. Unless its very bad and you need antibiotics of course. You will build up some immunity then. Just drink loads and eat wholesome food like stews etc if you get poorley.

I know we are all different, but for about 10 years now I have not taken anything for colds. Hardly ever get them now and if I do they are gone in a day.

Your train commute is going to put you into contact with every bloody disease 'going around'. And, yes, those Beechams/Lemsip/whatever jobbies are little more than pain-killers, so you don't feel so bad while your body fights it off, Chuck Norris-style (or, seemingly in your case, Mr Bean-style! wink)

Assuming you cannot 'lose' the commute, I'd bin the Beechams and buy some Berocca. Take Aspirin for any headaches, etc, it is dirt cheap, has practically no nasty side-effects, and more than a few (quite accidental) positive ones.

Fresh orange juice, every day. It really does work. And wash your hands when you get to work, and when you get back, and at obvious times in between.

All the early starts and long days won't help. I'm in the same boat on the commute/long day front frown

I have a cold about every 2 years, generally I think my immune systems is very good. I put this down to a reasonable diet, I drink loads of water and freshly squeezed O/J, avoid public transport and the fact I never take any pills unless absolutly necessary, and live out in the sticks.

Tis the public transport... sesspits of humanity

http://www.nursingtimes.net/clinicalnews/2008/10/c...

Just one example of the st hole public transport is hehe

Honestly though, a cold is a cold, but every human needs time to build up a defence against new virii or bacteria, and with idiots taking anti-biotics for everything and anything we are ultimately breeding stronger and stronger bacteria... along with of course the breeding ground for virii transmission/mutation in warm humid trains/busses etc...

Then you have those people who go to bloody work feeling unwell, but they 'had' to come in. NO you fecking didn't, you have just made it likely that another four people will be off work or under the weather in the next week because you are a cretin!
That is where I get most of my colds these days. A few days after someone else I'm feeling naff too, but often they go after a few days and are never that bad. BUT, it'd be nice to not have them at all if people kept away!

The above is nice VTECMatt, living/working in the sticks. You never get anything major and feel 10x better than stehole stressful urban environments!

I'd agree with the other posters and say it's public tranport. I've not had a cold for ages, but i caught the tube last week (which is once in a blue moon as i normally drive to work) and now i have the start of a man-flu.

Soon after I started the commute to London on the train, which I've now ben doing on and off for thirty years, I gave up fighting for a seat and have stood in the bar ever since.

Tea on the way in, beer on the way home. Brilliant. On average, one cold a year.

A bonus is seeing the weirdos who use the bar - "Can I have a cheeseburger with no cheese?" "Does the Penzance train stop in Cardiff?" "No milk? No milk? My children! My children!"

Pure theatre.

How many hours sleep do you get, on average? How many units do you drink in a week? Do you smoke, if so, how many a day?

Do you eat fruit & vegetables?

Are you stressed?

What you are suffering are not colds, it's far worse, it's Man flu. Men don't normally go to bed with a cold, if you do then you must be looking for some excuse not to go to work.
Perhaps you need to look at your lifestyle as well as everything else. As other people say, don't waste your money on cold remedies, a couple of aspirin or paracetamol are all you need if you get aches and pains and I've found that Breath easy strips work wonders for a blocked nose.
