What Is Your View... Brighton Marina

When it comes to developments, we all know it's something everyone will have a view on, but we have just won the first planning application round to get this turned down.

Don't get me wrong Brighton Marina needs upgrading but I think this is a frigging mess...



What do you think?

My own view is that anything that ruins a coastal view should be stopped. They should make it below the cliff height.

Anyway a lot of people feel that jobs are more important than the view. But if they did something more reasonable, maybe it would be more acceptable.

If anyone is going to spend money down there why don't they bulldoze the Southwick area and associated crummy docks and redevelop that. It's a disgrace and a waste of a large chunk of seafront IMHO.

That tower would look good on the King Alfred site.......aaaaaagggghhhh, what AM I saying........????? No, you're right, total overdevelopment, looks shambles. In my opinion I don't reckon the local infrastructure can cope with it all. And if Asda goes, where are all the 'Hawkers going to go shoplifting??

That tower is the worst bit.
Maybe they could make it into a Transit van park?

I remember my parents complaining amongst themselves that the funding for the marina was going to come out of their council tax, when I was a kid. I don't think they did anything significant about it, they were just indignant.

I would ahve thought that people in Brighton would be happy for the development TBH. I assume it's still owned by local government. If so then the sale of the flats would help fund redevelopment in other areas. Certainly brighton in general could do with some money spent on it. I accept though that there are many other southeastern coastal towns that could do with some money spend on them.

After all it's not Harrogate down here!

No it's two different private developers.

Are you sure you think the loss of the sea view is acceptable?

I don't mind, but I guess if you live locally then it makes lots of difference. I think when I was a kid we lived on the Lewes Road, so we couldn't see it even then! That was 30 years ago!


I suppose when the sea air gets at it, it's going to be an eyesore, like the marina it's self. If they just cleaned it regularly, it'd look a whole lot better, but I'm sure they wont.


With the downs (AONB) hemming everything in, it's like a mini monaco down there anyhow. I suppose the only way is up!

Im involed because one of the said developers wants to build over the side of the eastern arm and put in 180 concrete legs to make a platform for another office block. It's right on top of a brilliant surf reef.

They have run out of space in the Marina so now they want to take away our beach....

Well I hope you get what you're after, but I'm sure the pressure to expand is huge.
I remember the place being like a vast wasteland when the marina first went in. I have a feeling we have a family photo album somewhere with the pictures of the newly completed site with just the barrage.

I went down there ten years ago (cinema) when they were building the new housing development (low rise) where you could park your megayacht, outside your appartment.

I went down there about a year ago, and it just felt massively claustrophobic.

I fail to see how those buildings can make the concrete sh!thole that is Brighton Marina any worse. It's easily the grimmest mooring on the south coast.

God knows that part of town could do with a bit of revamping, but dumping that on top of it isn't the solution. The same way those ruddy great things proposed at the King Alfred wasn't the solution.

The local infrastructure can't cope with the current population arrangement on high days and almost every decent weekend during the summer.

The town would be better served with a chuffing great car park at Falmer, next to the new Stadium, and a tram/monorail/maglev/whatever down to the front. Least the locals wouldn't have to endure the tedium of the ruddy day trippers clogging the place up because the only parking is right in the middle of town.

I thought it was just an initial meeting on the 12th, not the formal application hearing? I imagine it will go to the secretary of state if turned down, and eventually be approved in one form or another.

I actually liked quite a few of the plans they drew up!
