A friend of mine just bought a 2 litre d manual m sport pre face lift, roof, leather, loaded etc 06 £15K Yes its nice for the money, but i cannot belive the difference in how it drives to my 3.0sd X3
Difference--Ok then how about 1.1 fiesta v Bentley GT.
My point. Having the twin turbo 3.0 d in your BMW is the bks it just transforms the car no matter what model.

Not sure on your point? 3.0 twin turbo dieses drive better than 2.0ds? Have to agree with you, being a 535d owner, but then there will be a significant price difference, fuelling difference, co2 difference, tax difference, etc.

You pays your money....

What do the stars cover up in title?

4x4 for people that can't afford an X5?

Its hard not to be drawn, but, Do you think all those folk in their Rav 4's drive them because they cant afford Landcruisers. Size matters of course we went down the engine rather than bodyshell route, Our debadged X3 has the Q car factor and is the quickest Bmw 4x4 0-62 (bm figures not mine) it sure as hell surprises a lot of boy racers out there. tongue out

Is the X3 3.0sd really quicker than the old X5 4.8iS to 60/62?

I confess to having been thinking about test driving an X3 3.0sd but I wonder if I want a 4x4. It seems like it could be the best of all worlds, or a compromise too far. What's it actually like?

Cant talk for the comparison, but since we just bought a 2008 2dx3 and i drive a 330ci feel i can contribute to the thread. the x3 does 0-60 in 9secs which whilst not earth shattering it does it with an AVERAGE mpg of 42mpg. i think the balance of efficiency vs sport in this car is simply tremendous. I know you are comparing the previous engine but the latest generation is in my opinion unrivalled in the market. Ive done the forecourt research (for my sins) and to put some perspective on it the honda crv petrol engine does 25mpg and is slower, the tiguan 2d averaged 32 on the test run and cost more to purchase. If you hadn't guessed very happy owner here. Not as fast as the 330 but in no way underpowered.

Sorry dont know the times for the old 4.8 X5.
For us our X3sd is everything to all men.
When towing and or fully laden it makes no difference it pulls like a train.
You will never be embarased on the motorway unless its something very exotic.
It returns 29.7 mpg.
I know its not everyones cup of tea but i like ours lots and lotssmile
All my mates were shocked when i turned up in my X3 and all were suprised at how well the thing drives and even more suprised at how quick it is.
Why have an X3 thats fast? Why not is the question.

More to the point, an X3 fits into a supermarket parking space and you can still open the doors.

How would you know? Oh yeah - you saw it on Top Gear.

Fast road tyres don't work off road.

Although I don't know why I'm defending the X3 - we got rid of ours. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The ride and noise in the back was awful, and our 3 litre petrol was pretty thirsty.

Lets face it all cars are a compromise, and the X3 might not be the best off-road but i was more than happy last week as we passed abandoned cars (on the road) where most 4X4s spend 99.9 % of their life.
We live in an area with some quite steep hills and last week in the snow used the hill decent button, Hey didnt realise how good that isbow

No chance.

And as for needing something exotic to beat it on the motorway...what a laugh.

Nope. Been down a green lane as a passenger in one. It was a 320 IIRC. Not a very bad green lane either as I have driven a Volvo 850 down it when the lane was dry.

Oh jim jim jim,
Do us all a favour and read the post properly, embarassed does not mean faster.
Ok lets all agree there are faster cars out there.
But although in the absence of any in gear times let me assure you, having owned some fairly fast cars the X3sd is no slouch.tongue out

oh little fella, little fella, little fella.

I drive an E61 530D everyday at work and it is really slow. The pickup at motorway speed is toilet.
If you lose to another car is that not embarassing? Especially as they will know you were trying your hardest when they see all of the black smoke pouring out the exhaust.

Please clarify your point, unless of course I already have.

Big bad J man. LOL.
