Quick question re:V5+buying cars.

Whats ave length of time for you to recieve v5 after buying a car privately? Ive been waiting 2 weeks. or 10 working days. should be no more than another week surely?

Im under the impression its the sellers responsibility to send it away (thats what we did anyway). Only asking because one of my friends got a car and the seller told him to send the v5...

Usually it's actually 4 to 6 weeks to receive V5.
And yes the seller should send filled-in V5. All the buyer should get is a little slip as a receipt to acknowlegde transfer.

thats exactly what we did. im pretty screwed because the car has got to be taxed at the end of the month, so what do I do if I dont get the document in time?

it's not very handy either for people buying cars to make a quick profit either. how hard is it to register yourself as 'trade'?

No worries

If you have that little buyer's slip you can get your car taxed with that (for up to 2 months or something like that) iirc.

Not sure about registering as trade though.

Take or send:

Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
completed V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)
The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for taxing for two months from the date you bought your vehicle. If it’s out of date, you’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name – please see ‘Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement’ below."

Fill in the (yellow?) part of V5, the "Sale or transfer to motor dealer" bit.
No change of keeper recorded that way.

I've always had V5's returned within 2 weeks. The most recent one was about 4 days although that was only a change of address, if that makes a difference.

I was specifically asking about v5's that have been sent away by the seller.
