i'm taking the family Next Sunday until Christmas eve and staying in Rovaniemi.
I have a few questions I hope the PH can help with
I am aware it's not cheap, that if possible the northan lights are a must. my girls want to see santa and play in the snow.
But as we are B&B in our Hotel was wondering if people can suggest good places to eat, any good shops about the area and anything worth doing that may not be on the info given from our holiday company.
Also anything worth buying from there thats local and would be a nice present.

not personally been to rovaniemi so I have no specific advice.
there will probably be some mexican restaurants.
stuff carved of woods (bowls, cutlery etc.) is a traditional Sami craft. failing that you could buy some Vodka (at great expense).
should be cold and dark.
you'll be lucky to see the lights as the sun is in one of its periodic inactive periods... good luck though, I hope you see them, they are awesome.

Presents: Arctic cloudberry jam (or frozen berries), raindeer meat in different forms, Saami designer stuff, Finnish sauna lenkki (heavenly sausages), a bottle of Jaloviina (if you can find it) the Finnish speciality drink, Salmiakki Koskenkorva (liquorice drink).

There IS a really good Mexican Restaurant!! I went there for my birthday a few years ago!! there will probably be some mexican restaurants.
There is also a webcam at the town hall so go wave at your friends back home.
Santa's Land is OK if a little "overdone".
I went to lapland, three years ago, god knows what part but..
Its very boring, there is nothing to do after the initial amazement at the snow (and the temperature probably around -30 at times) I would make sure you go on a dog ride, snow mobile, try and get up a mountain its interesting to see just how little there is there, apparently its not a given you will see the lights, remember its not light for very long. The santa bit we didn't do, but its quite an amazing place but 3 or 4 days was more than enough for me. I never need to go back.
Are you staying in a hotel or a cabin? We had a cabin with steam room attached, it was awesome. Mind you its not very fun having to spend 10 mins to put the bodysuit on before you can go outside
