Traqueur Finds Trans Am

French tracking company locates stolen British Pontiac

An English holiday-maker recently became the first to have his car stolen in France and then located by Tracker.

Hugh Mayes had been on holiday on the Burgundy Canal just south of Dijon for one week when his Pontiac Transam disappeared. Mr Mayes didn't know that his Tracker would work in France but luckily his son-in-law contacted Tracker HQ to enquire. Once the system was activated, French police retrieved the car within hours.

Stephane Schmoll, managing director of Tracker's French ‘sister’ company, 'Traqueur' (no that's not a joke ) said: "We are incredibly happy to have retrieved our first stolen English vehicle. Our aim is to make it impossible for thieves to get away with vehicle theft, so the fact we can work closely with Tracker in the UK and the French and English police forces means we can continue to build a stronghold that thieves will find increasingly difficult to overcome ."

Tracker is not all that it's cracked up to be.

I forgot to tell them tha tI as going to France. Stuck the car on the ferry (shame problem if it's on the Train) and no one called me that my car was disappearing off to france.

Why ?

Well the system can't track if the car is under a large structure (this might be a steel garage or a boat or a tunnel).

Secondly it doesn't work in Europe unless the system has been setup in the UK prior to departure.

Not particulary impressed and I heard that a 1/3 of cars with Trackers aren't ever recovered !!

I think a lot of the problem stems from the fact the Police do not have enough units out their equipped with tracker gear. With the reduction in traffic police as they are "very sensibly" replaced with "safety" cameras this will get worse.

To be fair...

- the system isn't configured to alert on taking the car out of the country.

- It works in France because the French system uses the same frequencies as the British system. Other countries use different frequencies so the systems are not compatible around Europe. It's not a case of reconfiguration.

- I'd also question the validity of your comment about not working under large structures. Many cars have been recovered from shipping containers etc.

- The statement about 1/3 of all Tracker equipped vehicles not being recovered is also very wrong. The recovery rate is still extremely high.

I may take it all back

But it only comes from my experience - I was really suprised that no one rang me from tracker asking if my car was on a ferry to france ! I called them to ask if it worked in france and was told it had to configured remotely whislt in the UK because of the mobile networks etc ..

They have called me when the car was transported back from HR owen one day.

I'd rather have the system than not but I don't think it's foolproof.

Is it an English car because of the owner, or were there Trans Ams made in England?

Definately odd Woof, I was called whilst i was about 2 minutes into the channel (at the bar )

Not like them. The recovery rate is more like in the high 90%'s too.
