Would really like to do a trackday in the dark, any tracks over here do them?

There are certainly evening track days in the summer months, but if you were thinking of now I think that you would be mad to consider it in the current freezing conditions...

Driving in the dark on a circuit is a very different experience to driving in the dark on a road. the only light available for the most part is that which your vehicle is projecting, and at speed you'll be amazed how much the landscape swallows and how little you can see ahead. Dips in the track surface suddenly become dark chasms and you start looking for highlights on kerbs to pick out apex points etc.

I found it to be a great leveller as well. Suddenly much bigger and more powerful cars than mine were having to slow down simply because they couldn't see far enough ahead to drive faster. It was almost like driving in the rain in that respect. Conversely, I found myself going a little bit faster - with less to distract me, lines through corners were much smoother and more flowing as I joined up entry, apex and exit points and just trusted that there would still be some circuit underneath me!

All of the above is race experience, and I don't know if there are trackdays available in the dark or not. I would recommend you give it a go if you ever get the opportunity though. I know the Toyota Sprint Series ran both a day and a night sprint at Teeside this year so there are opportunities out there for road cars.

No TDO currently runs track nights due to insufficient lighting at the tracks.

It would be fun though.

I agree with Patrick. Also, if you should happen to lose the back end, you dont know where to correct to, as not only is the grass and the tarmac uniformly black but when your headlights swing away from the intended direction of travel, unless you have other cars infront of you, your circuit is lurking somewhere in the blackness of your side window.
A short clip taken during qualifying a borrowed Mini cooper at Donington just after the heavens had opened too! I have edited out the bits where no one was infront as you'd be just looking at a black screen.
