I'v had my Sky box for about 10 months and today lost all power to it. Checked the fuse etc but nothing there, no lights at all.

I've had quite a few calls from Sky trying to sell me insurance to cover such events. Now, is this some kind of plan by Sky to install really cheap boxes that they know will fail so you will buy their insurance?

Anyway, what's your experience with the reliability of these Sky boxes? Will they fail on average every 12 months? I don't really want to take insurance out for what might be a low quality piece of equipment - sounds like a bit of a scam to me.

It comes with a 1 year warranty anyway so call them and tell them to send a replacement. If they insist that you have to send it away for repair then tell them you'll stop paying them for the time it's away...

If it's out of warranty phone up and say your switching to Virgin as your Sky box has failed. They installed Sky+ free of charge for me when I did this! biggrin

Never buy the insurance

Quite simple, if out of the 1st year you are out of contract

"Hello, mr sky customer person? yes, I'd like to cancel my £X per month package"

"Why?"

"My box has stopped working and I dont want to pay for it to be fixed"

"Whats that? all of a sudden you feel inclined to send someone round to fix or replace my box for £0 and 0p?, how kind!"

Yeah, that was my kind of thinking - threaten to move to the competition. However, I'm still within the 12 month warranty, so this time they are coming over to try and fix/replace the box. I'm just thinking about when the warranty runs out next year scratchchin

Wouldn't worry if it packs up again next year just follow the advice given and they will replace it for nothing

This was my plan when ours finally goes to meet its maker. However, I think I must be in the minority and have a box hewn from granite as I've had it since 99 and it's still going strong and refuses to die!!

Don't get insurance, Ring Sky, my sky+ packed up they'll charge you £65 for a replacement(just the box) with a 3m warranty if sky won't give you a box for free.
