Hi

Can anyone tell me with their 130i m sport when revved past 6k it seems not to pull very well, like a big flat spot between 6 and redline?

Only had the car for about 3 months and havent really had the chance to give it a proper blast. Only noticed it in first gear but not sure whether this happens in all gears...

Got another few weeks of warranty left so would like to get it checked if not not normal.

Your veiws would be appreciated

Probably because its moving out of the torque band.

Odd, mine pulls like a muthafecker from 6k upwards right to the redline.

How many miles has it got? I only use super unleaded in mine, this may be a factor?

Something is definitely wrong, get it looked at.

I agree with the other comments, mine fairly screams through the last 1000 rpm.

You say it happened in 1st - any chance you either hit the limiter or lost traction ? I would have thought it was unlikely to be a fault with the engine...

It may be part of traction control or first gear limiters.
Most new cars are ran by torque computers, you press a pedal, that gives a voltage to the ecu, and the ecu then decides how much to open the throttle to give you the torque you want.

as a result, they often have programs built in to limit power in lower gears, and invariably use the electronic throttle as a traction control device.

(ps- in your case though, BMW have ditched the throttle completely, and use valve lift instead, an amazing bit of tech that no one really knows about!)

With the roads in the state they're in at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if it was the electronics cutting the oomph. Try disabling it and see if it makes any difference. As per the others, mine just gets stronger and stronger as the revs climb.

How many miles has it got on the clock? Mine's done 13k and is considerably more willing to rev than it was even at 7 or 8k..

Mass Air Flow sensor possibly.

its only got about 9k miles.

It definitely hasn't not hit the limited as only at 6 rpm and still climbs and the engine hasnt stalled or anything but just a noticable drop in power.

I suppose the misses normally drives it so would only fill up on the cheaper fuel but still wouldn't think this would have an such a noticable effect after 6k rpm, if anything this would give less power right throughout the rev range?

Its not the traction either as the traction light doesnt come on, well not when you get to that range its more at 2-3k on some surfaces.

I live in central london also so haven't got the space unfortunately to try it in 2nd or upwards!

suppose i'll just book it into the dealer to get it checked.

Mine's got 30k miles on it, i never rev it that hard in first anyway but certainly from second onwards mine sails through 7k rpm like it's being chased by the devil.
Feels like it's got a flat spot if you try and rev it from cold but that's because the airflow is restricted by the butterfly (choke), once it's warmed it screams through from 4k to 7k and beyond. Oh and mine runs on normal unleaded just the same as it does on super, no difference in performance or fuel consumption.

Advice? Get the car out of London and try it, at least to 7k in 2nd and 3rd (once it's warm). biggrin

There is a good chance that a limiter exists in first as mentioned before. In many modern cars first gear has a soft limiter which will let you rev all the way to the red line, but reduce power so that there is not too much strain on the gearbox from 1st to 2nd gear.
The first car that I ever saw this on was a MKIV escort! 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear had different soft limit and absolute rpm limits (progressively getting higher), presumably to preserve the gearbox after the joyriders/17 year old sons had used the car!

Also if the car has never spent much of it's life in that rev range then it still wont be loose after 9,000 miles. Our 323 felt tighter than the 30,000 mile one I had previously even though we bought it at 90,000 miles - most of it's life has been within the M25.

Brilliant description. I am going to steal this line and use it as my own! wink

To the OP, this is what you seem to be missing, get it looked at forthwith!
