Refurb my desk

I have a nice solid wooden Project Furniture desk in my home office.
Its pretty big, and is a computer version - it has anti surge built into its central power suppy. It has 4 integral power sockets and a central power shut off. Must have cost a few quid when it was new.
Had it for years, really solid and chunky but over the years its wooden grain has become raised slightly as though it needs a sand down and re varnish.
Whats the best way to do it without ruining it?

If it's hardwood then you're better off with a scraper to smooth the grain first.

If you're using it as a real workhorse then you could finish it off with a two pack lacquer/hardener and the finish will last you years.
