Keep reading about an engine steady that connects the gearbox to the subframe. My 1971 car doesn't appear to have ever had one fitted, although there is a top bar to the block from the master cylinder bracket and an ultimate engine steady at the other end.
Were they always fitted as standard?? And where's mine gone...

Dont worry it hasn't fallen off, they weren't fitted to them then.

The Coopers had them, and they can be retrofitted. Mine is a 96 car, bought the bar and the plate for the gearbox, went straight on, my car came with one on the lower right also, but I don't think you would be able to fit that as easily. Makes all the diference.

Not in 1971 they didn't.
I think you'll find the lower steady brackets didn't start becoming a std fit until after the introduction of the rod gearbox.

Perhaps not, but can they not still be retrofitted?

If not fitted as standard you have to weld a mounting plate onto the front sub-frame.
However, an 'Ultimate engine steady' is much better.

Thanks Peter, with the Ultimate fitted could you do away with the one at the other end of the block, that links to the bracket on the master cylinder mounting, sort of think it's a bit superfluous.

Hi Richy, yes I kind of thought that would be the case although why doesn't it twist with just the original. Or maybe it does.
Slight prob as the bolt is sheared off in the block and didn't realise until the engine was back in........is this car cursed??????
Think I'll call it Christine!
Did you get my message/order by the way, Rich?

Thanks

This is what you need if removing the snapped bolt is too big a job.

thanks
Looks like MSSK002 will be ok as it's only the bigger bolt sheared, about 3mm down the hole and there is no breather fitted

Need to add that to my Minispares order.......may as well put a hold on that and add it to the next shopping list as latest delivery arrived today.
