No one likes these little bds, theres this big bd house spider (about 1 an a half 50p size) that has been escaping my boot of doom for 2 days now frown

I can be like a ninja sneaking up to it then as I go to strike it legs it up the curtain or under the sofa :/

does anyone know what sort of substance spiders are attracted to?

I need an attractant not a repenant because I cant have a damn spider beating me and the boot of doom needs apeasing (plus I know its gone if i kill it and if i spray repellent around I dont know that its gone) :/

those little flying bds go in sodding right angles so when you try and hit them they just do a 90 and sod off :/

fk me, you got to be fkin kidding - that's nearly a whole TWO inches... fk!

Fair dinkum, you do sit down to piss don't you!

We have two elusive "huntsman" (the rather large cousin of said house spider) playing hide & seek at our joint since summer arrived.. 1 and a half tea saucer size. You wake up for the regulation 3am slash and there it is just sitting at the top of the hallway wall.. "feck it, gotta piss - will get him on the way back" and guess wot, every time the smart lil critter has done a runner.

Grow some nads and leave the baby spider alone. Be thankful that when you wander into your back yard you don't accidentally walk into one o these puppies....

(yes that is a finch it is enjoying for lunch)

yes I know all about the huntsmen, nasty little buggers. infact Im pretty good with different spider 'makes'.

I just dont like worf spiders (and no one say 'what, klingon pasty head spiders)

if there big bds you can see where there running too and there not 'that' quick, although yeah, there pretty quick, its the smaller ones that dart about and are a bh to catch.

and no, I dont sit down to piss. :s

At least those Golden Orbs (the one easting the bird) aren't poisnous!

Saw a few of those up in North Qld earlier in the year.

Not overly bothered by huntsman's although my GF (Who's an aussie) hates them.

We had one sitting on the rear window of her softop Vitara once on the way to the station, and she wouldnt get out of the car till I killed it.... using a Biro! Damn thing was about the size of a small plate!

Funniest one though was when she was pannicking about a medium sized huntsman, I pointed out that the spider wasnt that bad, and maybe the (deadly) brown snake behind her (about 2m away) should be more of a concern!!eekyikes

that's a pisser.... the spider suddenly becomes a friendly option! Hunstman don't bother me too much, used to them I guess and I have been bitten by one as I was trying to scare my sis with it! (yup.. karma is alive and well!) but it was like a bad bee sting - nothing more. They are not overly agressive unless you really piss them of (sisters and huntsmen same)

The ones that irk me down here are more akin in size to the OP's mini-hunstman.. White Tail Spiders; agressive lil feckers that like hiding among bed sheets, in shoes etc and they arc up at just the slightest movement. Worse thing is that their venom is not the big deal, its some fked up bacteria on their fangs that literally can rot your skin for years - GROSS - hate the lil fkers.

Weak segway but speaking of nasties and Brown snakes as mentioned above, my poor sis (same sis.. hahaha, karma back at ya!) who now lives in rural Queensland and her neighbor are being menaced by a 5 foot King Brown that seems to have escaped from the Snake psycho ward.. it's completely nuts. it had a crack at my young neice last summer (luckily no venom got through the skin) and last month her neigbor had to scramble her & her 3yo tin lid onto the trampoline when it actually chased them across the garden, managing to lunge and sink it's fangs into her flip flop! (I'll avoid using the proper word "thong" as you poms will have weird mental images of a 5 foot snake latched onto some trotter's G-string!) It then circled under the tramp for at least 10 mins before getting bored and pissin off - like somthing out of a B grade horror flick! They still ain't caught it and it claimed one of their working dogs this week as well; poor pooch was in it's cage, had about as much chance as England winning the ashes wink

Yep, White tails are bloody awful..

I have only ever seen 2 of them... and they both met the underside of my shoe!!

Redbacks are also a bit nasty... I accidentally sqaushed one with my hand without noticing!! I had to ring up my secretary at the time to ask how to tell if I had been bitten!!hehepaperbag

Apparently I hadn't, and I shouldnt be so pathetic hehe

That snake sounds nasty! Other than that one I haven't realy had any contact with them. Having said that though we saw a number of Red Bellied Black snakes on the tracks up north.

Cheers
Pete.

I think the finch in question might dissagree!

They are venemous IIRC, that''s how they nail their prey before they do the Christmas gift wrap. (just not poisinous enogh to damage your trusty human)

Drifting again but still on things Arachnid, I heard that the harmless spider we call the "daddy longlegs" actually has the strongest venom of any spiders but it's fangs are so small they pose no threat to any mammals. I'm sure I've seen a similar model in the UK, just can't recall the common name. Looks almost like a mini mini version of the Orb spider (pictured enjoying finch dejour). Body is only 4-5mm and spindly hair like legs up to an inch or so long.

Any arachno profs up bright & early to bring some facts to the table?

they are called harvester spiders, and its been disputed that the venom is the most poisonous as for there size the venom is deadly, but you put that up against something like a black widow's venom and the harvester is a pussy cat so to speak.

and you are correct that there fangs are to small to peirce human or most mammels skin.

You know what I would do if a brown king snake lunged at me a few times, I would go get my trusty shotgun, wait till I saw it in the garden, chuck a sausage or something out to entise it closer and KABOOM, shredded snake smile

Yeah.. my Brother in law (an experienced outback kinda bloke) has been prowling gun in hand and turned the whole area upsidedown trying to find it's hiding spot. He's killed a couple of smaller males (and probably pissed off monster madam even more - now she's not getting any!)

Evil snake this one, and shifty to boot. Only appears around women, kids & dogs. It's days must be numbered one hopes. Before too long he might be calling on the local "bruvva's" to do a bit of that tracking crap they are always going on about wink

best thing about the daddy longlegs is that I think they kill the other deadly spiders. Redbacks and so on.

Just as a word of advice about Spiders.

I have a friend who like me lives in an old farmhouse (read infested with everything including spiders).

Difference between us is I love spiders so I have all sorts of different breeds of them, she hates them so stamps or hoovers all the ones she can.

Unfortunately the easiest ones to catch and kill are the Giant house spiders (I forget the name of them but they are the big ones anyway). However as well as the obvious benefits of them eating pests they serve another benefit which is they eat other spiders........Can you see where this is going now?

There is another breed (there are about 5 or 6 "common house dwelling spiders in the UK") which from memory is the hobo spider and it is one of the few uk spiders which can bite ("don't worry it is more or less harmless"). Giant house spiders eat these.

So while I have allsorts of spiders I have never seen one of these nasty nippy buggers.

She has had 2 bites off them. And still won't listen about killing the big ones.

You won't ever get rid of spiders, get over the irrational fear of them and enjoy them, if you get a web spinning spider (not all do) they are great to watch when a fly gets caught in the web. Awesome hunters.

I find that impossible to believe. Birds are pretty powerful.
