Mobile phone for the visually impaired

In the tradition of using the wealth of knowledge on PH to ask an entirely non motoring-related question

My mother has poor eyesight and has trouble with her current mobile- now I've looked around and I can find phones specifically designed for the seriously vision impaired (i.e. those that speak the numbers as you dial) but in her current condition she really just needs one on which you can change the screen to a high contrast colour scheme or perhaps select a larger font.

Specifically a white on black scheme would be good.

I ask as websites don't seem to detail such functions and she has already been through a number of different phones this year so it's getting a tad expensive and thought someone might have some personal experience so I could be a good son and get her the perfect mobile for chrimbo.

My iphone has fairly large colourful icons. And the phone keypad (touch screen) has large white on black numbers which cover the whole screen.

Probably not the cheapest option, but a thought. The only downside is the lack of tactile keys chich would obviously help a visually imparied person.

Yeah, I think an iPhone might be a bit bewildering for her. My Blackberry Bold also has a really nice clear screen but both of those are expensive options when all she requires is something quite basic.

My new house phone has a relatively small screen but the text is white on a black background and she had no trouble with that as her problem is something to do with light (ignore my simpleton explanations!) so with a bright white background the black letters get lost against a primarily white background on a standard phone.

What about a Motorola Fone F3?



Can be had for stupid cheap money - i.e. about £20, sim-free.

At that price she can try it and punt it on eBay if it's no good.

Thanks for all your suggestions- thing is, my mum is only in her late 40s so knows her way around a keypad but just has trouble reading texts so I was looking for something more mainstream in it's look (i.e. so she doesn't feel a bit 'special' when folks see it) but with a screen that can be changed to a high contrast display.

The Motorola F3 looks promising with it's white on black 'liquid paper' screen and can be had for about a tenner so I guess if there's not much else out there it may be worth a punt but I just thought there might be something a little sexier out there.

Edited to add- Commander', looks like we're on the same page as I just saw your suggestion. It's actually the phone I suggested to her about 3 phones and several ££s ago!

In a more mainstream (and capable, because the F3 does have naff-all features) vein, what about an old-school Nokia?

I have a 6310i I use for work and it's the dog's danglies for that particular role.
