just got a council tax bill through....

From Leeds council for july 2006???

I moved to london in Jan 2006 and as far as i remember everything was paid up in full for the old place in Leeds, i made sure i didnt forget anything, now this comes through. Now like the idiot i am i got rid of everything from the leeds place (Bills, etc) after a year, how can i prove i did/didnt pay it?

Its for £500 that they want now, not sure what to do other than just pay it, but want to make sure that its a valid bill as i have had issues with council being stupid in the past and billing for something thats been paid.

unfortunately i have switched banks and if it was from when i think it was the joint account was shut down shortly afterwards.

eh ?? You moved to London in Jan 2006 but you paid in full for everything in Leeds - now you have a bill for July 2006 ?? So that for your new place then ??

What period is the bill for? If it's for a time after you moved, just tell them you moved out in Jan '06, this shouldn't be too difficult to prove.

I'd start by phoning them and asking why you've received it.

tried that, they are busy so i sent an email stating this.

na it was a joint house account that i closed when i moved it was used to pay all bills, i didnt need it anymore so i closed it when i left the house as it was attached to all of our accounts, th house opened another one when i left without me.

So maybe the people left in it did not pay for a while and they have your number and not theirs ??

Were all the people declared that were living in the house ?? i.e. not one person living there with a single persons reduction but a house of students living there ??!!

I just had a similar thing in Edinburgh council.

Apparently you don't have a right to appeal against a council tax bill. So unless they concede fault you will have to pay it eventually. Unless you have unequivocal proof in your possession you have to pay it. They won't even investigate as they don't have to by law. If you don't pay they will take you to court where you will lose and have to pay their legal fees. If you then decide to take a moral stand you will go to prison as it's easy to send someone to prison for evading council tax and refusing to pay than it is for assault.

I'm currently in the possession of a mis-calulated bill based on a flat I shared with 5 people. Because I'm the first one they found I am liable for the entire bill. They will not investigate as I'm guilty until proven innocent and they don't have to.

Who owned the house? If it's not you, then the council tax bill for where you were living in July 2006 is all you need.

It was only me that was working and i did get the reduction as the rest were students, i set up the account to make it easier to pay everything, but only i paid the council tax, everything was cleared when i left and it closed down.

What does the bill say then ?? From what date is the 500 quid for ?? From when to when ?? Cos its got to be for a few months ?? Has the band increased on the property by any chance ??

Just ring each council for the 4 places and ask for a copy of the bill.

liability order for 27/7/06 for a bill of £500 owed to leeds council.

That is it, nothing about when it was for or anything else, just a demand to pay up.

So they've got a liability order without informing you of the court date? I'd be looking into contacting the issuing court this afternoon and getting it removed if you weren't notified!

I only did the bill for one of those, it was held in someone elses name for the others and i doubt they will give me a statement when its in another persons name, being difficult and data protection act and all.

And even then they got the bill wrong and left us with a bill for £100 due to them getting it all wrong, its not difficult to send a final bill to pay and then 3 months later ask why we didnt pay an extra £100 not in the final bill sent to us.
