Intestate inheritance

Tried googling this but couldn't find anything definite...

A friend of mine's great aunt died recently and she left no will, she is survived by two siblings, no children, no husband or partner.

In this case google seems to say that the two siblings will take equal share of the estate. Does the fact that one sibling is older than the other give them any sort of increased entitlement, or is it a straight 50-50 split?

Anybody know for sure?

Age doesn't matter - it is a 50/50 split if they are both siblings.

It gets a bit more interesting, there is a suspicion that there was a will but the will has "mysteriously disappeared" from her house. Is there a way to trace the will assuming she did it with a solicitor, if we don't know who the solicitor is? I assume there is a central record of these things?

Worth a go, a trip to the probate registry is booked for tomorrow apparently, so we shall see what happens...

My mum is going through the same thing with my grandfather's estate, even got a copy of my grandmother's which gave a clue to the solicitors used, but they've since closed...

Our solicitor has gone through the Law Society to try to find the will, which was definitely made at the same time as my Nan's.

Even if it is not found, everything will be split 50/50 between my mum and uncle, it just takes longer (currently 8 weeks since granddad passed away (RIP)).
