£495 for root canal treatment - reasonable?

Afternoon all,
Sorry to trouble you with such trivia, but I have a quick question for anyone familiar with root canal treatment. I've been told I need it after having a filling go slightly wrong and causing nerve damage, or at least that's how I understand it.
I've been quoted £495 to do the work. Takes hour and a half apparently, booked in tomorrow afternoon. Now, I have no idea what this sort of stuff should cost, but it sounds pretty expensive - anyone have any insight into whether that's about or taking the p*ss? It's in Harpenden, Herts, which, as an aside, appears to be the UK capital of dentistry, they're everywhere.

Got mine done on the NHS for £43.60 earlier in the year. Would have been £189 on HNS to completely rebuild the tooth (luckily that wasn't needed).
Privately to have root canal and rebuild the tooth (Crown) i was quote upwards of £900!!!! In Newbury, Berkshire.
ETA: It can be quite a painful process but i guess what you pay for. The burning of the nerve endings isn't nice you can taste the smell if that makes sense.

Nope, I paid a bit more than that 5/6 years ago in Cheltenham, the tooth lasted with just a filling till this year, just paid out another £400 (Docklands) for a decent crown and associated stuff to make sure it will last.NHS treatment is the way to go, but I can't wait for that now, has to be done ASAP, so happy to pay, just wondering if they're a bit OTT. Also wasnt that painful, injections take the pain away, just got left with major jaw ache from having my mouth open for so long.

It was my first time; I thought it would hurt quite a lot so I was not looking forward to it. Was hoping he would be gentle with me and was really nervous when I noticed he had a bigger one than normal. It felt like quite a deep insertion but I opened myself wide and there was little discomfort.
Was surprised that the root canal work wasn't any worse than a filling. And it cost about £40 under the NHS.
