I'm 99% sure I've had a book stolen from my room at uni by a housemate. My room is locked (yale lock) but I'm sure its not impossible to pick it.

Thing is I have no proof. I've recently had disagreements and have had threatening texts off this housemate, and I am certain I have not miss placed the book as I havn't used it or moved it. It was definitely there last week. Have tried to ask him about it but he denies knowledge of where it is.

Any ideas of what I should do next? Need to fork out £35 for a replacement, a fortune for a student! Is there any chance my possessions insurance will cover this despite lack of any proof?

have you thought about setting up an elaborate honey-trap and then blackmailing them. Maybe then sleep with your sisters boyfriend behind the only pub in the area?

I saw it on TV once, I'm sure

You have the internet, you don't need books.

Break into your housemate's room. If you find your book, take it back and st on his bed. If you don't find your book, search for some other "incriminating evidence" and then st on his bed anyway.

Maybe ask them about it? and buy a new book if you're a student. Don't let this ruin your studies.

This sounds really serious. I think you should go to the Police and get a crime reference number. Demand action. Ask the officer on the desk if he shouldn't be out catching criminals instead of hiding in an office. They like it when you tell them stuff like that, makes them feel appreciated.

Failing the above, you could always kill yourself.

I'm a newbie, so I have to tread carefully, but my first thought on reading may have been a little similar to your post! (OP go with my first response)

even if you have no evidence wait until he goes to bed, creep into his room and cut his face off

seems appropriate justice for theft to the value of £35

Apparently there is a special Pistonheads fund for situations such as this. You have to carve a 1/4 size replica of the stolen article from balsa wood, and send it to Petrol Ted with an invoice for the replacement article. Nine times out of ten, you will get the money, once it has been authorised by the comittee that oversees the fund.

There is a sticky somewhere about this, I will post a link to it if I can find it. (Otherwise, just pm one of the mods, they will point you in the right direction)

If you really want to have a chance of getting your £35 back, write in to Haymarket and tell them you made 100 entries into the Win A Lotus fund and want your cash back...
