Hi all,

I've started to develop a bit of steering play on my S2 111S (56k miles), which is still fine but at some point in the new year I'll spend some pennies and get it sorted. The garage who did my C-service suggested that there was some wear in the steering rack, which is quite plausible, although I had a similar issue on my old TVR and it only made it 20% better when I forked out for a new steering rack, but my attention was subsequently drawn to two universal joints on my TVR, which when changed improved play by 60% at much smaller outlay. Are there similar such joints in an elise steering system?

On the Elise as on most/all cars you have track rod ends and these wear. These are about £20 each, parts only.

It would be worth turning the steering wheel to full lock, to see if the gaters on the steering rack have any holes in them. Ingress of water kills them.

If you need a rack, I have two in the UK, both in as new condition as taken off cars for LHD conversion. Otherwise you can get the parts to refurb yours from Titan in Cambs.

It can be a case of nylon parts in the rack are worn and are only £30 to replace, need to get the rack out which is fun. Some racks have brass parts instead of nylon ones which require a whole new rack.
