I really enjoyed this show. Can't believe that such a wonderful house can fall into such disrepair. Being left such a massive legacy; is it a chain round your neck or a wonderful opportunity? I wonder... It won't happen to me so I don't need to worry lol! I'd love to stay there though and thought the location and architecture was pretty impressive. The chaps done well considering he could have just left it all to the National Trust!

The National Trust don't want any more houses and I couldn't see them taking that one in any case.

I think he needs to lay off the mushrooms.

That's inheritance tax and minimum wages for you.

You have to sell part of the estate to pay the IHT meaning you've got less productive land. Minimum wage means the produce costs go up making the land unviable so you sell a bit more.

Bit more IHT later and all you're left with is a big house with no land and no way to sustain it.

That's what happened at Lullingstone Castle, they only have 100 acres of land left, hence why they lease apartments in the house and set up the World Garden to keep it going.

Also, how pissed would you be? you go from having no money to inheriting a £25million estate, but no cash. The thought that technically you're a multi millionaire on paper but still skint and do you want to be the bd that sells off the estate that's been in the family for 700+ years.

This is the reason inheritance tax is a GOOD thing - it would be sold and put to good use. Come to Alderney where there's no inheritance tax and there's buildings falling down aroun you; all owned by just a few natives, none for sale and nothing being repaired.

Agreed but I didn't the Tories scrapping it when they were in power for 18 years, granted houses were £5 and the threshold was high ... but now suddenly when they're not, it's back on the agenda again.

Agree that Labour have not helped themselves over it though ...
