Junction 4 M18 Doncaster. Link road to and from motorway slip roads.

Blacked out window van approx. 150m from roundabout as people head for local roads next to a burger van. The link road is NSL.

The plod was out in force further down and pulling people in. 6 Bikes 2 patrol cars about 8 PC's on foot all attending a very large queue of cars/vans waiting for tickets. I estimated about 20 waiting.

I assume everything was being checked here. They had cameras for speed, a tax checker and also a beamed emissions sensor.

Luckily I was fully legal and travelling quite slowly in a pickup.

Beamed Emissions Sensor?

How do you know they had this sensor?

What would it detect and what would be the offence?

Oddly enough an emmision sensor detects your car's emmisions...

they give outon the spot fine for Exceeding stated emissions levels. not sure what class of offence it is exactly, but I remember reading something about good old mayor Ken setting up random emissions tests with DOT around london a while ago & issuing on the spot fines if your emissions are over the specified limits, you get a ticket.

I guess it will be linked to the emissions levels they measure at the MOT test. theyll fail you on it if they are too high, i know cos they failed me last may, cos i have to use octane booster to prevent detonation and it screws emissions badly so id be knackered if they stop me!

if you have a car with a cat & havent tuned your engine tho as long as the cat aint knackered youll never have to worry.

That's where I . Car's that aren't available in the UK don't have to have a cat and only have to pass a visual emmisions test. i.e. not smoking.

When they do an MOT the tester checks your model (possibly closest car) against those in his "little book" Toyota Sera's are not even slightly similar to anything available in the UK, so they have to do a visible test only!

What does this sensor look like? Does it pass a beam of light across the road to be collected and measured by a receiver? I've never heard of one. Can it detect a cow farting or the passenger (got a horsebox)! What about that toasted starling stuck in the radiator, would that screw up the supposed emmissions or can it actually measure the trace elements? I'm really intrigued with this.
