Best Before is a guide, Use By means take your chances.

You should be able to tell whether food is OK or not without the label, though.

Id it's "best before" it's fine to eat after the date, if it's "use by" then don't use after the date unless you're really hungry and really want a bacon butty!

I've had beer (from a can) that was 3 years beyond the "use by" date. It was fine, exactly the same as the "newer" stuff.

Much of the reason is to make sure you buy more from the retailer, rather than hang on to it and spend no money with them smile

What about if there is mould on top of a sauce / jam and you scrape it off and eat the good bit underneath?

Reckon that is okay?

Can be pretty bad for you if you eat the mould. Bear in mind it can be further into whatever you're eating than what's visible, too.

Low risk foods have a Best Before Date, after which the quality of the food may be dimished, but it is unlikely to pose a health risk. Typically ambient foods, pickles, etc.

High risk foods have a Use By Date, after which their bacteriological TVC (total viable count) is likely to cause illness. Typically dairy, meat, fish, high protein products.

Ask me how I know.....

PS: NEVER store cooked rice at room temperature. Even re-boiling it will not not rid it of the toxins formed by the Bacillus Cereus bacteria. Or buy shares in Andrex............

If you have a strong immune system, maybe.

If you dont - ie you are a child, elderly, or have a damaged immune system for other reasons you might end up at the co-op. And I don't mean the supermarket. Ever wonder why so many old biddies get wiped out in a food poisoning? Raw egg mousse and OAP homes do not mix well.

Oh, it was a use by date, seems I'd kept it open longer than it said I should too.

Not feeling very well now.

Upstairs? Downstairs? Both ends?

Length of time of onset of symptoms after eating?

Try to keep fluid intake up - Dioralyte etc is best or failing that orange squash with a little table salt in it.

Also Kaolin and Morphine or similar if a downstairs problem.

Most fit-ish people can fight off a bout.

If you have real concerns see your GP pronto.

I would brought up on out of date food. My mum would not throw nothing away. A yogurt wasn't edible until there was a clear liquid on the top. Its a running joke when we have dinner at her house as we have to check all the dates. She had some Panadol headache tablets - date was 05/00 !!! I still had to argue with her to throw them away. and I reckon she got them out the bin when I left...... Still, its helped me have an iron gut.
