Dummy X-Box 360 questions!

Hi.
I'm after a bit of advice. I've decided to buy an X-Box, but as I'm a bit 'out of the loop' when it comes to consoles I've got a few questions that I'd appreciate some answers to- that a simpleton like me can understand!
1- Is the 60Gb the best bet for someone who mainly wants to pretend to be a racing driver, or could I make do with the real cheapo one? I don't mind spending the extra if it's worth it!
2- Is the Lotus steering wheel thingy any good? We have them in the shop here (which we get a discount on) but I'd appreciate some un-biased reviews!
3- Should I be worried about the problems with the red lights coming on and locking the system up, or has the problem been sorted on new ones?
4- Playing online. Once the subscription is payed, are there any other charges sneaked in later? What other equipment do I need to play online? I have hard-wired broadband at home. Is it possible to play all games online, or just some? I mainly want to race my mate when we're pissed!
Appologies if these really are thicko questions but I haven't bought a console since my PS2 and there was none of this going on then!

1- Regardless of size, you want one with a hard disk. Plus the slightly more expensive one has a shiny silver disk tray - worth the extra money.
2- The lotus wheel is the best I have used, I don't own one but has used a friends. It feels solid and is accurate.
3- Red light problems shouldn't occur with new consoles, but even if they do you have a 3 year warranty!
4- Pretty much all games can be played online. No other hidden charges, no other equipment required apart from a headset if you want to talk to your mates. Headset comes free with 60gb Xbox.

Costs - for online you need XBox live subscription. Only other costs are, as described, optional add ons etc. Most is unecessary, although for example on FOrza 2, some people play games on tracks that are DLC (Down Loadable Content) - and without these you cannot join those races.
Steering wheel - not familiar with the Lotus one - but check it has proper force feedback rather than just vibration 9the Logitech XBox ones just featured vibration) - I have the XBox official one, and like it a lot, but it is pricey-ish (think £60 ish these days) and does the job for me. I've got an old Logitech PS2 one too that works both on PS2 and PC, it was good but doesn't function properly on the XBox.
Sadly, MS tend to keep some of the features to themselves, so in the past steering wheels of non MS origin haven't been able to implement FF, which I think is great as a feature.
