Does anyone know where the joke about Brit's having poor dental hygiene and therefore hideous buck teeth comes from?

I'm hearing a lot of jokes based on this at the moment and just wondered where it originates from.

Just in case you're wondering, i don't have yellow or buck teeth.

Americans pay a fortune to get the slightest quirk fixed at the dentist, in the UK people dont't really tend to get things fixed. Unless you can eat a sandwich through a letter box, then remedial work isn't really carried out.

Isn't it based off having the NHS, and that we have 'free' dental plans ergo it must be appauling?

I'm sure a lot of it is down to the Royal Family, they have awful teeth on the whole and the Yanks see them a lot.

The yank kids on xbox live go on about it all the time in the little arguments everyone has. Same goes for us calling them fat, lazy & stupid.

To be fair though, we have few dentists as they train here in the UK but get poached by the USA as they have preferable working hours and pay.

And yeah, americans tend to get everything fixed early as they usually have dental insurance which they make the most of.

No, it's based on Americans being far more vain than Brits and thus willing to spend on cosmetic dentistry, whereas Brits tend to not mind if everyone doesn't have identical fake vaneers and happy with what god gave them.

Actually its to do with the fact that the yanks have fluride put in there water to promote healthy teeth. It was a government inititive, bascially saying look at the Brits they have ste teeth and we won't because we are going to poisen you all with fluride...... mugs!
