Is it possible to be able to place your cursor over the thread title and see the first few lines of the post without opening up the thread?

But that would result in people not opening the threads and then posting how fed up they are at the life-wasting and annoying post content.

It is possible, but it would require a bit more processing power to go and look this information up as it isn't available on that page. So at the moment it isn't something we will be implementing for reasons of keeping the forums running as quick as we can.
