Is a 5w/30 sufficent.

That what i've just used. The manual suggests 10w/40 but the better option is 5w/30

No problems as i know off, I did it six weeks ago and its fine. As long as you don't mix synthetic with mineral then no probs. If i'm wrong someone will be along to correct me.

Nobody corrected you so I assume you can mix ?

Reason I ask is that its just had 5W-30 at the last service but I have 4 X 5litres of 10W-30 in the garage.

Can I use this to top up the 5W-30 stuff or not ? Whats thinner 10W-30 or 5W-30 ?

I am no expert on oil,and I may stand corrected, however when I first got my 04 vxr,the cap requested mobil 1 ,but the'grade' was not readily available here in uk.
When I had the oil changed at Vuaxhall Monaro dealer, they put in the uk spec.
I dont know what grade/viscosity gets put in now.
Mitsubuishi have a similar issue for my evo X.

5w is the thinner,Purely on a personal note,I top up another of my cars with 10w,however service agent uses 5w,same make of oil mind.

The way I understand it, the 5w will be thinner at cold, but once warmed up they will both be the same

The numbers on the oil like 5w30, the 5w refers to the viscosity when cold and the 30 refers to the viscosity when warm, The dealer i bought ma car from used 0w30 oil from mobile one but, when i went to buy it from work its no avalible anymore from mobile 1, its now 0w40 oil but still matches up to the spec in the service manual, all oil has a API ratin to which is in ur service manual, if u have the manual check it. Ma car has always been serviced with 0w30 oil

The oil grades that u can use in an 04 plate are

ACEA-A3/B3
GM-LL-A-025
GM-LL-B-025

You will find these grades on the back of the oil bottle, just match them up
