I never ever shop at Jessops but they were offering an Ixus 860IS for £132 instead of around £180 from anywhere else. Ordered on-line for store pick-up and drove 20+ miles to Cambridge. In the meantime they emailed me and texted me to confirm it was ready in store. On arrival I'm presented with a scruffy looking box with a large dayglow sticker on it saying "preowned stock" (something it would be very difficult not to notice). Most of the wrapping was missing from the contents and they had lost the original battery and replaced it with an own-brand one. He offered to knock £20 off - about the price difference on the own-brand versus original battery, i.e. no real discount at all. They really do not deserve to continue in business.

Same sort of thing happened to me, wanted something (Canon 30D), phoned the shop, was told it was in stock, went all the way to get it only to find out it was ex-display. No apology, offered me £10 off (£700ish total).

I don't know if I can write them off. Even though I'm now a Canon user I couldn't resist buying a D90 to try out for a bit of fun and a cheapish camera to carry around when I don't want to be lumbered with the old 1DS & 24-70. I bought a "refurbed" D90 + 18-105VR for £500 knowing I could return it if it was not all that nice and also knowing I'll probably get more than that for it and it is absolutely as new, even the clock hadn't been set yet...

Absolutely perfect with 12 months Nikon warranty and around £215 cheaper than their online price....

Jessops are the worst of the worst. I once asked in the Reading branch if they sold tri-x 400 "is that a colour printer?" was the reply"

I ordered various things from the uxbridge branch which never never turned up. Morons of the hightest calibre. Whatever store you go in the staff are clueless idiots, its really very strange.

On a different note, had fantastic help from them in Bournemouth.
The guy that helped me was a top bloke and had their prices been more competitive I definitely would have bought from there...
It's just a shame there is such a gulf between online and shop pricing... frown

Refurbed D90? This is only just out. Or did you mean D80. I tried to buy a D90 kit lkike the one you mentioned from them but they were 100 more than Dixons at the airport.

No it was a D90 (the one with video) with 18-105VR and completely like new. Apparently, Nikon (and Canon) offer refurb cameras for a number of reasons. The best of which is if someone orders one online, opens the box and returns it under their distance selling rights or something. Then the camera / lens cannot be sold as new!

I bought a refurbed D80 + 18-135mm once and that was not only dead cheap too but it had scratches on the LCD. Not that I would care but if you put something on Ebay with a mark on the LCD people panic like the whole camera is useless when you're actually probably better off because then you won't care about putting more marks on your camera but will just worry about getting good pics.

Since Ebay came on the scene everybody wants a pro camera that hasn't been used by a pro, with almost 0 actuations, never taken outside, no marks, software and manual never opened...in other words they want a camera that hasn't been used as a camera, just kept in a cupboard like their Hornby train sets...

I've bought 3 cameras (2 point-and-squirt plus my D70) along with a lens and flashgun and other assorted gubbins from the Milton Keynes branch (the one by the hockey stadium, not the one in the shopping centre that is now closed) over the last 4 or 5 years and have had nothing but exemplary service from them. The staff I've dealt with knew their stuff, were keen photographers themselves and were generally happy to deal if asked. It seems that there isn't enough consistency across the country with their staff, judging by the amount of Jessops-flaming threads that appear on here, but the same could probably be said of most major High Street stores.

Yes sometimes you get a store staffed by photo enthusiasts and sometimes just people who work in a store work there. You just have to get lucky...

Did you use the one in Bournemouth town centre, there's a guy in there who's a complete Canon nut and really, really helpful! thumbup
You'll have to get us some pics of your cars up 5han! wink
On a different note, the Jessops at Castlepoint was next to useless, I went there with the intention of buying a 70-200F4, given the right price, and I couldn't get anyone to talk to me... rolleyes
Oh well, I sorted that on eBay couple of days ago! biggrin

I bought my camera from the Jessops in Rugby and the guy there was very helpful.

You cant expect every employee of a big chain store to be a photography expert, some will be enthusiasts and some will just be there as its a job.

Where might I find such a thing? There is no mention of 'naming and shaming' in the posting rules.

they were the same in the smaller (now closed) shop in Northampton, the guy that we bought our D50 from was a photography student and worked with one of the local photographers, very helpful and knew his stuff

Well I don't know which rule Ted is referring to because these are the rules as published:

When using this website you agree not to:
1.Post insulting, threatening or defamatory material.
2.Post any material likely to cause undue annoyance, provocation, upset or embarrassment to any reasonable person.
3.Name companies or individuals in relation to accusations of malpractice, fraud or other criminal or civil offences.
4.Use the forums to harass anyone, including but not limited to posting personal or private information and images.
5.Post material which infringes copyright or other intellectual property rights.
6.Post material or links to material that may be considered pornographic, violent, racist, sexist or voyeuristic or is otherwise offensive or unlawful.
7.Post links to websites or adverts for your own commercial gain. Please use our classifieds section for cars, parts etc. or contact the sales team for banner advertising.
8.Create multiple profiles.

And, no, I don't believe this falls within number 3 - it's neither a criminal nor a civil offence, just a pain in the @rse.

You reckon saying that you ordered something presented as "new" online only to find it actually wasn't isn't malpractice or fraud?

Sure sounds like it to me.

I personally think this no naming and shaming rule is ridiculous, but if we want to be pedantic, it is clear to me that you are flouting the rule.

Even if I was a mod, however, I wouldn't bother with editing or removing your original post.

And for the record, I have had nothing but good experiences with Jessops (albeit all going back a few years).

Conversely, I've used the Jessops at bluewater a few times for some fairly big purchases and find that they'll happily price match (or rather get within £20 or so) and for that I'm happy to go with them. thumbup
