I'm probably not going to make myself popular by saying this - but what is going on with PH and some of the posters on PH at the moment?

Virtually every new vehicle launch, every "special" that is announced, every new car company that proposes a new car - every time someone does something interesting - it gets sgged off on PH.

Every single thread is getting destroyed by the naysayers, every new fast car is compared to the Veyron, every new car maker that steps forth gets disarmed with the Sniff Petrol Press Release blank (which was funny at first), someone aspires to a Ferrari and they get told to buy an M5 repeatedly, an American company makes a new car and it "won't handle", Lotis launch their Evora and its gets slated by armchair warriors.

What is worrying is that Pistonhead's isn't allowing new companies to build new cars (especially the small independents); its actively destroying them before they've got anywhere. Would any of the PH team ever build a new sports car and put it on PH for the world to see and watch their hard work torn apart by keyboard warriors who think adding a resistor to a 1.6 Focus makes it go faster?

What is even more worrying is the ever increasing number of keyboard warriors who have never driven a fast car who have opinions on handling on fast cars because they watch Top Gear, 5th Gear, etc. These are great programmes but ffs could some of them stop repeating what they hear on the TV like a parrot and go check these things out properly before offering an opinion? Quite frankly there are too many keyboard warriors in GG who pretend to petrolheads who are in fact just tedious son's of bhes who shouldn't be posting.

The Lotus Evora news thread from yesterday is shameful.

The GTR is crap thread is even more shameful as frankly its not a crap and anyone who thinks it is should buy a bike and join Cycling Plus and fk the hell off from here. Its the ultimate Pistonheaders car and didn't deserve that thread either.

Please don't hide behind the "everyone has their say and we're an open forum" line. This is becoming a serious problem on PH and needs discussing.

Is PH about the cars or the whining?

And for pity sake could someone remove the word "sg" from the swear filter and whichever childish mod who added it taken out back and shot.

I think I understand your point, but i'm not sure what the 'solution' is?

We support all new cars through editorial features in an unbiased way.

Am I right in thinking you want negative comments removed, or threads where not everyone agrees closed?

I'm just trying to ensure I understand your feedback smile

For your information moderators do not have any control on adding or removing words from the swear filter. We only "moderate" the forum posts.

Which wall would you like to stand up against?

Apologies. But can it be removed as its totally overkill.

Someone once said that the cream rises to the top. That's because the people who say it only ever drink coffee and talk. True metal people know that it's the sg that rises to the top, mainly because they have seen it with their own eyes.

Unfortunately the swear filter isn't clever enough to be able to work out a word in context and thus it is currently blocked. The reason for words being blocked is due to us not wanting these words to be indexed by Google and thus bring in unwanted posters who are maybe looking for "Car sgs". Also we have to constantly moderate the forums so as the cleverer firewall, proxy, net-nanny equivalent pieces of software get put in they don't ban PistonHeads from the list of allowable sites at work. I know quite a few sites get picked up and blocked (even Virgin Media blocked Wikipedia recently), and this will probably get worse.

Though to be honest your post isn't about the swear, but thought you would like an official answer.

Yeah, I think you get my drift. I don't know what the solution is to be honest, maybe its time to rate individual posts and have a running score like you see on the comments section of the Daily Mail online. It would allow the negative posters to be seen as negative rather than gaining support. It would also allow people who don't want to post the ability to vote a particular post down as well.

Ask yourself the question Paul - if you had spent 4+ years of your life, your hard earned cash, you've remortgaged your house, you have several investors behind you, you have everything on the line, and you have built what you think is a great new British sports car - would YOU want it on PH where it will probably get torn apart over 120 posts by armchair warriors? How would you feel when you see the Sniff Petrol PR posted about your own project and people start sneering at you?

Is that what PH is about? Because that is what its becoming.

I think your wish is impossible, without stifling debate and over moderation.

If anyone is obviously posting to wind people up they will be dealt with as usual.

I speak with most manufacturers, and Ollie looks after the rest of them. Between us we cover the smallest to the largest and I assure you that they don't mind the comments made. They know the ones to ignore.

Is that the official response? You've removed a valid English word because its been bdised by people looking for "car sgs"?? I can understand all the other swear words which I don't need to repeat but this particular word?

And I thought Virgin Media banned Wikipedia because they were using the IWF Clean Filter system (or whatever its called) who had listed an album cover by the Scorpions as child porn? One thing I can be sure of is that PH doesn't host child porn. And if you are worried by the IWF and their list - they call you before they block you and try and intimidate you by threatening to call the cops.

It appears we won't be able to give you a satisfactory answer to your question.

Perhaps we could chat at the show Justin? We'll all be there, could be an easier way?

Like our day to day superhighways, the interweb (and Pistonheads) has always suffered from low calibre, dim-witted, road enraged individuals who can only see a way of out-shouting their peers by being unthinkingly crass, rude and idiotic.
And then maintaining they have a right to their opinion as if it were relevant and correct.
It's suffering (has done for some years) imho from it's own democracy.
How you allow for pucker creativity in the face of these fkwits is beyond me.
Well, if you can't avoid it, then just ignore the ignorant. Otherwise, go somewhere else, preferably closed to a like-minded 'membership' and definitely not democratic or free.

People writing st on the internet doesnt affect the sales of car companies.

PH is a lot like topgear, a bunch of pointless but amusing banter that shouldnt be taken seriously.

Can see the OP's point, though from a slightly different perspective.

A big part of the problem is that anyone who dares say they don't like something gets branded a tyrant and things escalate into a war of words with one party claiming it's rubbish, another claiming it's fantastic, and another running around shouting think of the children.

I've no idea why opinions seem to be more polarised on here than ever, I had thought that it could well just be down to PH being bigger than ever so it's just the same as it always has been, but with more people saying yay or nay.

Could be anything really, but I really don't see there being any solution to it other than giving said threads a wide berth. Without playing antagonist everyone is entitled to an opinion (sorry hehe ) and the whole premise of PH is to discuss and share opinion surely. People on here certainly seem a lot more riled up about new releases though.

Far more annoying is the increase of clarksonisms and humourless bhiness

Correct, though I wasn't going to go into the specifics, nor the politics of the IWF. As I said above your post is not about the swear filter, though I do know for some people it seems to be a massive emotive subject.

Without trying to be argumentative I don't see the relevance of IWF or Netnanny or anything like that. I've dealt with the IWF on several occasions and you don't just get listed.

So you wouldn't allow anyone who hasn't driven a fast car such as a Caterham 7 R500 to have an opinion as you think they would be completely influenced by a TV show's view on it?

A personal opinion of yours, but have you driven one and because it's your ultimate PH'ers car why do you think it's automatically everyone else's?

No-one is hiding behind it, but in all honesty its true and what are you going to do to stop it. Also your contradicting yourself as your whining about PH.

Historical. PH was always quite well heeled and people didn't need to swear. Then the masses found PH and swearing became an issue. There may have been a few members who refused to stop swearing and that seemed to escalate the speed at which the filter was put in. Sign of the times.

I believe quite a few younger kids read PH as well.

Speculation. I meant, can someone from PH give me an "official" reason? It's just about the only forum I can think of that has one.
