Integrale mods ?
Discussion
are there any mods that are not performance enhancing but just worthwhile upgrades or modifications to help the life and maintenance of the car ?
I am thinking along the lines of superceeded parts, more reliable components be it in the drivetrain, chassis, suspension or cosmetic departments. Things that might make ownership a slightly safer prospect or strnegthen any part of the car.

Hi
Lots of goodies here.

Deffinately recommend upgrading all of the hoses to Samco items! The originals are notorius for splitting with age.
Especially the rear 'hose of death' which feeds from the waterpump, branches off for the resevoir and also round the back of the block. The original one is a joke, however Tanc's have one made by Samco under license... Defo worth doing!

Other than that, I can't really think of a lot else other than plugs+leads and other basic stuff. Everything else is pretty well designed
Although though sacking off the balancer shafts is worth doing IMHO...

oh man .. this is getting scary !
im alreday planing mods and i havent even bought one yet !!
getting way too excited
thansk for that, added to the list which now looks like this:
better drop links ?
poly bushes ?
renew pick-up pipe from the oil pump to the block ?
lower chassis strengthening bars ?
braided brake hoses ?
better corrosion resistant oil cooler pipes ?
renew dampers ?
grooved OMP discs ?
full rust prevention treatment ?

if anyone has any comments on any of that then id be interested to hear
i think the lower chassis bracing interests me, esp. if it can help with the bodyshell twisting and cracking. If I get one of these beauties I will have it for many years I imagine so I want to be thinking for the future. Not sure what the diff cradle does ? Maybe that might help with rigidity as well.
also, anyone know what the intercooler 'tilt' mod is ? does it help access to some water pipe connector or something ?

See my posts on CLS about the IC tilt mod
Basically there is a big nasty restrictive duct on the turbo inlet, sandwiched in between the IC... The 'tilt' mod involve much angle-grinderness to the front crossmember in order to create space to allow a starighter run to the turbo. Hopefully some pics will help:

Diff cradle is also worthwhile as the rear 'sub-frame' (if you can even call it that!) is very, very flexi.
Brakes wise; braided hoses are a must, brembo OE discs, decent pads (ferrodo, mintex etc..) and DOT 5 is probably a good road starting point. I would probably steer clear of the OMP rotor's though as I would imagine they're cheap for a reason haha.
Improving an Integrale is a never ending task/obsession. It's not that the original design is bad, it's now 20years out of date and with a few cleaver tweaks they can still embarress the modenese metal

gerat stuff!
and yes, clear on that tilt mod now.. thanks for those pics
sound like my kind of car ..
I like continual improvement
gives me a reason to get my hands dirty
what do you think about tuning ?
i dont really have to tune and would be happy to run a stock car
but if it doesnt affect reliability then could be tempted by a wee but more power/torque so the car is a bit closer to stock evo/scoob power.. e.g. around 260bhp ?
is this sensible ? what would need to be done ?

They are very good engines with a lot of potential! However, there are many areas that can be improved even on a stock(ish) car to be honest.
The exhaust manifold was designed by an accountant and as such is rather restrictive so a tubular stainless item improves flow no end. Also, the exit elbow straight off the turbo strangles flow so is worth upgrading.
The above coupled with the 'Tilt' mod with a decent chip upgrade (with increases boost levels) will easily return anything in the range of 250-280bhp depending on the boost increase.
You do have to watch the stock mareli management though as it's a little primative; if you take tuning too far with this still installed, your likely to destroy your engine through det. Many of the regulars have upgraded to Motec, Omex etc...
The sky really is the limit with tuning though, but it all depends on budget to be fair! As with most cars there are many problems to overcome, but with some cleaver engineering and a small mountain of cash the dizzy heights of 350-500bhp has been reached many times before
