Prices you paid and recommended suppliers please 50 miles radius of London.

1. Chassis blast cleaned and painted / waxoyled including any dead end tubular chassis rails.

2. Original 15" OZ wheels refurb including minor scuff repairs (do they split the rims to do a proper job)?

3. Full wood refurb / replace (no, I don't want C replacements)?

Thanks

Phil

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that link. I know there are a bunch of companies that carry out this work but I like to recommendation route!

Nice chassis you got there.

I'd like to get that done to the SEAC I went to see over the weekend but prefer to farm it out as I just do not have the time or space to carry out the work myself.

Cheap I am sure it's not.

Hi Alan,

The car needs some serious TLC.

Difficult to determine just how bad the chassis rot is when on uneven ground outside a garage.

Seat belt mounts rusty on the inside of the car maybe gives you an idea!

Phoned a couple of places today to get an idea of cost to clean, treat and repaint (Austec & Dulfords) £450.00 from Austec but this does not include lifting body off chassis so can you really get to where the rot is, I think not?

Dulfords charge from £1000 - £1600 to lift body off chassis and I believe localised blast cleaning but this does not include stripping the chassis right down, any welding work needed, or professional powder coating. That cost £5-6K ouch.

Wood needs thorough refurb, I image circa £250.00.

Minor crazing / bruising around this 20 year old body. Only to be expected I suppose.

Engine seems fine but could not take it out as no tax or MOT and it's currently on a SORN.

Minor oil leak underneath, probably from rear crank seal.

Really wish I could find someone who has the room and inclination to assist for a negotiable fee and let me act as the labourer to take the body off chassis and strip it bare to have it sorted properly.

I'd probably save 50% cost and end up with a better job. I'd consider spending circa 2.5-3K+ going that route. I fancy a metallic silver chassis. This would leave enough funds to replace all those tired hoses etc under the car.

What to do.

I have the funds but would like to make an offer to take the above into consideration, or at least part of it.

phil, i am in the process of rebuilding my car, i only have a single garage to work in, so planning of work needs to be done. i have finished working on the body now and i am waiting for the chassis to be shot blasted, zinc coated then powder coated, this should be ready by early januaery, i will then start rebuilding it, new bushes, suspension and all bolts, brakes will be rebuilt along with new brakes pipes, steering rack and any thing else i find that needs doing, i hope not to break the 3k barrier and at present am on target, if you need to have a talk about what is involved pm with your phone number.

Sorry Phil, been out of action for over a month (see bionic thread).
What SEAC are we talking about? A recently advertised one, white or grey?
Sorry, maybe i'm assuming & you have owned it over a decade.

Sounds a fair bit of normal/typical stuff due to it's age, wear & tear...wood etc, so plenty of advice here on professional replacement, London carraige Craft, or doing it yourself, some fine examples out there. Sorry again to assume you haven't perused the Wedge pages http://www.tvrwedgepages.co.uk/ but there are some good well written articles on there for picking ideas up on.

Good luck with the listed work your planning, look forward to hearing/reading your progress.

Good luck, thumbup

Hi Wayne,

The white one.

I'm intending to take my De Tomaso off the road and cannot be without a 'different' motor and have always fancied a SEAC.

I have visited the wedge pages but thought I'd post here for some recommended garage services as I'm wanting to farm the work out and want rough costings before I jump in.

Have not made an offer on the car just yet.

I can recommend this company:

http://www.classic-car-services.co.uk/

They are near Maidstone, so not too far away. They have done some very good chassis and body work on my mate's Mustang. Not a TVR specialist, but do all manner of classics. Might be worth a call?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for that link.

Re chassis work refurbs, there seems to be two levels, one leaves the body on the chassis and just goes for a thorough cleaning, metal treatment and painting (air dry of course), circa £500.

The other route is to take body off chassis, blst clean and wet paint or powder coat. This of course means stripping the chassis right down with the inevitable parts replacement including hoses, pipes, bushes etc. One place quoted between £1000 - £1600 just to lift body off and treat the chassis.

Full monty £5 - £6K, ouch.

£2-3K sounds better to me as this car has had replacement adjustables fitted so hopefully suspension components will not need replacing.

I'll give your place a call.

I do not want to end up spending NHS money as that is going into the 12 month job on the DT.
