I have a mate who has recently relocated his track to Finchley, North London; went to see it recently and... wow!

I was amazed at what I saw; about 50 metres of lanes... all monitored by computer for lap times, fastest lap etc. Some serious cars and even more serious racers.

I never would have thought there is so much into racing at this level... track and tyre temperature for example!

Some of it sounds quite geeky, but then, these guys are some of the best in the country for racing.

When I were a nipper I used to play slot cars at a track in Coulsdon, Surrey. It was the real deal, spongey tyres that you put sticky gloop on, brass chassis, all the latest bodywork. Track speed of over 40+mph which equates to about 300mph scale speed if I recall. Then I grew up and bought a car!

That's an amazing set-up but I'm reminded of:

But it always took about fifteen billion hours to set the track up
And even when you did the thing never seemed to work
