Legacy starting

I know it's not an Impreza...
Our '04 Legacy, 2.0 N/A, has an intermittent cold-starting problem. As in, it never does it when the garage have it in.
It starts ok, but sometimes dies or is really easily stalled. Then, it takes about 10 secs cranking to re-start with lots of white smoke and smell of unburnt fuel from exhaust. Anything obvious, or is it main dealer for diagnosis?
