Onkyo AV Receiver, any good?

Bit more background if you can be bothered to do the reading!

I know pretty much nothing about hi-fi/home cimema stuff, but I've been looking at a new receiver, the main reason being I want to sort out the utter mess of cables I currently contend with at the same time as building a new enclosure in the fireplace for all my AV "stuff"

Replacing my outdated Yamaha (which to be honest I think still sounds great, but I'm something of a audio-luddite) with a fancy reciever I can connect everything to (mostly HDMII and have one HMDI feed to the TV seems to make sense.

I need to connect:

PS3 (HDMI)
Xbox 360 (HDMI)
Wii (AV or Scart)
Windows Media PC (HDMI)
Sky HD (HDMI)

I'd like a spare HMDI too if possible, you never know!

You'll have to forgive the silly question as I know nothing..

What does "built better" mean when talking about hifi stuff?

Less plasticy (brushed aluminium as opposed to hewn from a solid lump of plastci)?

Knobs dont fall off?

Less rattles when driving over rough road surfaces? Better panel fit?

I should have said in my OP, I'm using a set of 5 Sony surround speakers and sub at the moment. No idea what model etc. they are, cost about £500 3-4 years ago. They arent the best by a long way, missing out on midrange quite a lot I think (again my very basic non-informed opinion) they will be staying for a few months yet but I will eventually be replacing them with a set of small but more capable speakers, thats the next challenge!

have just ordered the 606 and when researching the 606 always found good reviews on the 806.

www.avforums.com have a section dedicated to the onkyo brand. have a look in there, where i did a good bit of research.

Should I be looking at the Micro speakers on the website?

I couldnt see the Onkyo 806 on your website, I'm guessing its one you can "get in" if needed?

Things may have changed now, when I last bought a amp/reciever (Denon 3802) the denon was nicer to look at, buttons & knobs felt better to the touch and seemed solid when picked up where the Onkyo was quite tinny.

The Micros are a 3" driver and the A'Diva are a 4" driver.

Similar construction, A'Divas have a slightly larger range, Micros are available in more colours.

I'll drop you a line first thing tommorow if thats alright, sure we can work something out for you though.

if you're dishing out advice - what sub would you pair with he gallos in a 3.1 arrangement (yes i only want fronts, as i'm not going to fanny around trailing cables all round the wall!)

Got a Onkyo 605 here - and excellent!

Onkyo have won a load of What Hi-Fi style awards over the last 3yrs - recommended.

Only slight down side is the amps get quite warm...

only ordered mine on friday so not holding out much hope that it will turn up by xmas, maby newyear if i'm lucky.

Just have to find a new center, rear & sub for the system

I am running an 806 through a pair of large B+W front speakers and the sound is awesome. Going to go the bi-amp/bi-wire route in the new year. Haven't got a TV yet so not using the rest of the facilities/channels.

The unit gets hot - like nearly too hot to touch on the top so make sure it has plenty space around it. Ours is doing a fine job of heating the lounge!

Got an 805 here, the 806 is a bit of an oddball as rather than being a progression from the 805 it's been rather costed down and lost 10lbs in weight

This makes some sort of sense in that in the previous gen there was a large jump between the 705 and 805.

That said it's still a THX Ultra2 amp for £500 (£300 cheaper than the 805 was!), which makes it a bargain

Tha is as long as it doesn't come with the optional exploding capacitors
