Dear all

This morning I unfortunatley wrote off my vxr, I was exiting the M25 towards Junction 14 (t4) anticlockwise, when going around the long sweeping corner doing approx 65-70, I downshifted from 5th to 4th, the back immediatley locked up, sending me into the offside barrier, the car spun and I hit the nearside barrier square on doing about 50, this in turn spun me back into the road, but I managed to get it on the hard shoulder. Massive frontal damage, no trace of bumper/headlights, bonnet is ok (above level of barrier), both rads are bent like bananas, the airbox is broken in half, engine pushed back in engine bay approx 6", and both wings have been pressed back into the doors, behind the doors the car is completely undamaged. Im quite sure itll be a write off, any idea what payout to expect, its a 56 plate black vxr, 16k miles, mint condition (was), wortec cat back, and AP's(all mods declared). Im with APlan underwritten by markerstudy. I also have a question about the mods, can I remove the APs and put standard brakes back on, as the policy has a standard part repair clause? Garage collect on Wednesday, so what exactly happens?

Many Thanks

John

glad your ok.

if you declared the brakes leave them on. they may come back with, we insured you with better brakes that are not fitted, any excuse not to pay out.

Only paid a grand for them over a year ago, thanks for the advice. Will call them later to check if I can remove them or what the situation is. Will post pictures later when I get the chance. Insurance are picking up wednesday afternoon, and theyre aware itll probably be written off. If they do write it off, can I go to the storage site and remove the brakes there, Im sure ive heard someone on here saying that theyve done this. Also, what type of payout should I get, as this will make my mind up about getting another one. Ive checked insurance, on confused with a £20k claim (higher due to potential barrier repairs), and its coming back at 1300, before this it was coming back at just over 1k. What are my exact rights in regards to the brakes (was going to swap exhaust for standard, but since the engine has moved back it will be bent somewhere), am I entitled to get them back, or can they factor this in and give a better payout?

Many thanks
John

once the offer made and you accept it belongs to the insurance company mate you cant go and remove them.

you maybe able to do a deal with them to pay less and you remove but i doubt it

I am glad you are OK, though your situation does perhaps show how important it is for drivers of modified cars to understand the conditions of their motor policies when taking out the cover.

If you have access to the car I would salvage as much as possible before the loss adjustor does his assessment, as you won't get a representative amount back for aftermarket parts. Declaring the mod doesn't necessarily mean it has to be there. Although here it becomes whats practical.

I an old car of mine suffered similar fate which had a full race exhaust system, shocks, intake etc. All declared, but I had time to replace the exhaust and intake with stock (already scrapped the old suspension so couldn't change). Insurance didn't care as they based the claim amount on the state of the car when the adjustor saw it. Even the cd player (forgot about and asked the insurers after it had been assessed), they let me take it out as long as I put 'something' back in (cue knackered tape deck).

Also check how much they want for the salvage....

Hi all

just got off phone with insurers, theyve said to leave car as is, they will take brakes/exhuast into value. If we cannot agree, I can remove parts at storage place and replace with standard. Would probably be better in long run to remove brakes, but I think itll be an excuse to stop them paying out, so Ill hold fire for now.

Rgds

Good luck getting it sorted. You paid a grand you said for the AP's? My initial offer was based on the RRP of 2 grand so if we halves it, 250 ready and waiting driving

gutted for you though

bigjohn,
Could you do me a big favour before it goes Wednesday? Could you take the 2 rubbers little L shape rubbers off the bottom of the rear window for me? I’ve had them on order from Vauxhall for 18months and they still haven’t got them for me.
And I’ll have the AP's from you as well if the insurance doesn’t pay you out for them so let me know what’s your price if you decide to remove them.
Cheers

Any idea why the rear locked up? I'd have thought changing from 5th to 4th at 70mph would have been ok.

Sorry about the prang John. How did you get your ap's for a grand? Were they new or second hand and where from? Cheers.

I bet it was wet and you was turning and braking and down shifting at the same time which unbalanced the rear. The rear goes light then you loose the grip. Glad know one got hurt is the main thing.Still gutted for you John
